Applications are invited for appointment as Professor on tenure terms or Tenure-Track Associate Professor in Urban Science / Urban Design Analytics / Healthy Cities in the Department of Urban Planning and Design (Ref. 502741), to commence on September 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. Appointment as Associate Professor will be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Exceptionally outstanding candidates may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.

HKU’s Department of Urban Planning and Design is an internationally leading planning school with excellence in teaching and research in urban studies and urban planning. Its vision is to make high-level impact on urban planning and policy developments in Hong Kong, Mainland China, the Belt and Road Region, South-east Asia and further afield, via its unique blend of urban science, planning, design and policy analytics.

Entering its 40thAnniversary, the Department is one of the most long standing and globally respected urban research centres in Asia. The Department offers taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in urban studies, urban planning, urban design, urban analytics, housing policy and management, and transport policy and planning. The Department seeks an outstanding academic with proven international leadership in research, teaching and knowledge exchange in the field of urban science, urban design analytics and/or healthy cities. This is likely to include theoretical, empirical and/or simulation research in one or more of the following: big data, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, GIS, urban sensing, smart city, spatial statistics, parametric urban planning and design, generative computational design, urban environmental modelling, urban economic modelling, urban systems modelling, complexity and planning, urban physics, urban ecology and healthy city science.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in the relevant fields. They should have a distinguished and sustained record of high-quality impactful research, as indicated by publications and competitive grants, strong connections with industry, international recognition for scholarship, capability of leading inter-disciplinary projects related to smart planning, smart living, smart mobility and smart environment and applying smart technologies to enhance urban livability, health, efficiency, resilience and sustainability.

The Faculty of Architecture has 21 professorial staff (assistant to full professors) actively working in urban data science with 10 of those being in the Department. This is one of the largest groups in the world. The appointee is expected to lead the Department further along this trajectory, and develop high-profile research and academic programmes related to urban sciences, urban design analytics and healthy cities. Proven skills and competence in mentoring younger academics is essential.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and/or University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
