The Department of Oral Health Sciences (OHS) invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor position with 50% tenure-track eligibility. This position is full time with a 12-month service period. It will remain open until filled, with an anticipated start date of April 1, 2021.  A mandatory review for tenure and promotion must be conducted no later than the sixth year of the appointment.

The Department of Oral Health Sciences in the School of Dentistry comprises a diverse group of faculty and trainees who carry out research, scholarship and teaching in oral biology, dental public health and biostatistics (URL: https://dental.washington.edu/oral-health-sciences/). OHS faculty teach in the pre-doctoral dental curriculum, and to graduate students enrolled in the OHS and clinical specialty programs in the School of Dentistry. The successful candidate for this position will be expected to establish and direct a laboratory-based basic science research program with a translational emphasis that complements and augments the existing OHS graduate program. Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include the training of graduate students pursuing a PhD or M.S. in Oral Health Sciences, and the teaching of didactic and laboratory-based courses in the life, biomedical, and oral sciences to graduate students and dental students. In addition to teaching and research, all University of Washington faculty members are expected to participate actively in service to the university and profession.

The successful candidate must, at a minimum, have a PhD in a field related to craniofacial biology or oral sciences. However, candidates with both a DMD/DDS and a PhD in oral sciences will be preferred. Applicants utilizing modern experimental approaches and model systems to study oral biology or craniofacial science are particularly encouraged to apply. The clinical degree (DDS or DMD) must qualify the faculty member to obtain a Washington State dental license or teaching license and therefore make it possible for him or her to teach clinically, and possibly to deliver patient care through the School of Dentistry’s Faculty Practice. In addition to directing an innovative research program in the oral sciences, qualified individuals should have some experience in teaching lab and didactic courses in the life sciences including molecular biology at the graduate or undergraduate level, as well as experience with grant writing.

Interested candidates should submit their CV, names and contact information for three references, and a cover letter addressed to the Chair of the Search Committee, Dr. Richard Presland. The cover letter should summarize your academic career including academic and clinical training, mentorship of students, teaching and research experience, clinical experience, and any past administrative responsibilities. Also, a candidate should address their qualifications and interest in becoming a member of the Oral Health Sciences department at the University of Washington.  Please submit your application materials to Interfolio (http://apply.interfolio.com/81142) no later than January 25, 2021.

Inquiries about this position may be sent to Dr. Richard Presland, PhD, Graduate Program Director, Department of Oral Health Sciences, University of Washington School of Dentistry, Box 357475, Seattle, WA 98195-7475 (rp@uw.edu).
