Job Description Summary

The Department of Human Development and Family Science ( HDFS ) in the College of Human Sciences at Auburn University invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured, assistant or associate professor position in the area of health disparities or social inequality. This position is expected to begin August 16, 2021. Social inequality has increased at a disturbing rate in recent decades with a multitude of consequences for disparities in health and development across the life span. Candidates for this position are expected to have a productive program of research pertinent to social inequality, broadly defined, and with relevance to human development, relationships, or health. Possible areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, inequalities in adult development and aging, disparities in child or adolescent development, social determinants of health, analysis of demographic trends in health or social inequality, policy influences on health or development, racial/ethnic or socioeconomic health disparities, or minority health. Responsibilities also include teaching graduate and/or undergraduate students on topics or methods relevant to the study of social inequality or health disparities. The department is committed to hiring faculty with demonstrated experience in research, teaching, and/or service in historically underrepresented and underserved communities.

THE DEPARTMENT : The department includes 25 faculty members (17 full-time, tenure-track), 300 undergraduates, and 45 graduate students and offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees. It also administers undergraduate and graduate certificate programs in Health Equity Science and leads a campus-wide Health Disparities Research Initiative.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctoral degree in human development, sociology, demography, population health sciences, or an allied discipline at the time employment begins. Applicants should have an ongoing research program with relevance to health disparities or social inequality, strong methodological skills, and excellent communication skills. A research background that includes expertise in social epidemiology, population health sciences, or demography would also bring added value to the position, but is not required. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.
