Description

The Department of Art at Smith College invites applications for a full-time, two-year position as Harnish Visiting Artist and Lecturer in Photography to begin July 1, 2021. The initial term of appointment is for two-years with the possibility of renewal for an additional two years. Applicants should have an active exhibition record and fluency with historical and contemporary art. MFA or MA is required by the time of appointment, as is independent, college-level teaching experience. Candidates from groups underrepresented in the field are encouraged to apply.

Teaching obligations include four undergraduate courses per year. We seek candidates with expertise in photography, who are fluent in digital workflows as well as analog and darkroom practices. Applicants who bring an interdisciplinary perspective to their studio practice and teaching of photography are encouraged to apply, as are applicants whose work engages the expanded field of photography and its links to other studio disciplines. As a department, we value art practices, research, and pedagogical inquiries that consider global contexts, racial justice, and historical inequities within the discipline. Annual teaching responsibilities include courses in photography, at least one foundation-level course in digital media or cross-disciplinary practice, and an advanced cross-disciplinary capstone course for senior Art majors.
