Director, Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Education
Hawai’i Pacific University (HPU) is a private, non-profit institution of approximately 3,500 undergraduate and 800 graduate students. Founded in 1965, it is Hawai’i’s largest private university with its core campus in the heart of Honolulu’s business district.
The university is seeking a dynamic inaugural director for the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Education who will animate the mission of the Center by creating an environment for students, and faculty, and community stakeholders to examine, discuss, and enrich an understanding of entrepreneurship and facilitate the expansion of economic education within the State of Hawai'i. Program activities will include the development and implementation of a "K-12 Teach the Teacher Program" to promote basic concepts of economics with free market principles within public and private school settings; the advancement of a Speaker's Series to highlight the importance of entrepreneurship and economic education; and the establishment of a summer research program to advance economic research on important economic policy issues for Hawaiian elected officials (local, state, and federal).
The successful candidate will be an established scholar committed to the principles of entrepreneurship who will engage in scholarly, intellectual, and/or professional activities required to advance the mission of the Center. The successful candidate will have an earned terminal degree in an appropriate discipline, such as business administration, economics, entrepreneurial leadership, finance, and/or management.
This is a full-time (12-month) administrative leadership position with an expectation of teaching up to 6 credits/year, active scholarship, servant leadership, and consistent community outreach.
- An earned doctorate in a business administration, economics, entrepreneurial leadership, finance, management, or related field from an accredited university.
- Three years of experience teaching at a university at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
- Established research and scholarship agenda that includes publications.
- Demonstrated leadership experience within a business or university setting.
- Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate students.
- Demonstrated ability to bridge to and engage with the business community.
- Five years of experience teaching at a university at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent administrative, budgeting, and strategic planning skills.
- Demonstrated ability to engage with donors and work effectively with university development staff.
- Demonstrated ability to lead faculty and staff.
- Desire to support and advance the Center's mission.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
1. Administration of Center Activities (50%-60%)
- In conjunction with faculty from the College of Business and the School of Education, plan and implement a curriculum for K-12 teachers that equips them to teach modules in basic economics with free market principles, which they will be able to share with their students. Coordinate with faculty on curriculum content and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders within the community to ensure program acceptance and success.
- In conjunction with the University, create, promote, and manage a speaker series focused on free enterprise and rational economic thought that will feature a nationally or internationally respected scholar to present on economic topics of interest and challenge to the university community and to the broader Hawaiian community. The director will be responsible for coordinating the selection, scheduling, and supportive details with senior leadership, in addition to careful consultation with other internal and external stakeholders.
- Develop and implement a summer research program designed to support two faculty members each year to conduct research on important economic policy issues for Hawaiian elected officials. The director will oversee the selection of faculty fellows, ensure timely completion of defined research projects, and collaborate on the dissemination of research findings.
- In conjunction with senior university officials, participate in donor discovery, cultivation, and stewardship activities related to fundraising efforts to sustain the Center's operations.
- Engage regularly with the local business community by attending functions, participating in local organizations, and encouraging affinity with the Center and the university through the cultivation of relationships of external partners.
2. Scholarship and/or Professional Engagement (10-20%)
- Engage in research or professional projects and disseminate findings through publications, presentations, or invited talks.
- Participate in professional colloquia, seminars, and workshops; and to share ideas and the results of professional or scholarly endeavors with peers both at the university and in the larger academic and professional community.
- Clearly demonstrate the impact of intellectual or leadership contributions, in alignment with the Center and university mission, goals, and values.
3. Teaching (10-20%)
- Teach 6 credits of undergraduate and/or graduate courses in topics related to business administration, economics, entrepreneurial leadership, and/or management.
- Develop a syllabus of course activities that meet the requirements of the course description or program chair, establishes appropriate student learning outcomes, and provides for appropriate class activities throughout the semester.
- Plan and deliver individual classes that conform to the syllabus and other requirements of the University.
- Demonstrate a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively in the context of an integrated education.
- Demonstrate innovation and impact in pedagogical design and delivery.
- Maintain accurate and complete records on student participation and performance use appropriate measures and evaluate student performance based on established student learning outcomes, provide timely feedback to students and assign grades that are an accurate and fair evaluation of student work.
- Submit grades and any other required documentation in a timely manner.
- Administer student evaluations of faculty at the end of each course, review evaluation summaries, and meet with the department chair and dean to review.
- Post and maintain regular office hours at times reasonably convenient to students. Serve as an advisor to students to assist them in understanding the curriculum, especially within the major, and mentor them as they plan their degree programs and careers.
- Active involvement in developing business sector relationships for case studies, class projects, internships, field trips, guest appearances and any other “bridging” activities.
4. University Service (5-10%)
- Attend orientation programs and Faculty Assembly meetings and participate in academic duties.
- Participate in committees; course, program and curriculum area coordination; curricular development and textbook selection; instructional workshops and activities within own curricular areas, policy and program review; or other learning assessments.
- Serve as representatives on school or college level and university level committees of the Faculty Assembly, as well as on other task forces and committees that assist the chair of the Faculty Assembly and/or the deans in the formation of academic policies and related matters.
- Colleges will further determine and articulate specific expectations for university service.
5. Perform other related duties as assigned (5%)
- Actively participate as an effective member of the team by completing assigned duties and/or accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
