Director of Engineering (Open Faculty Rank, Full Time) - (21-22)

 

Description

DePaul University invites applications for a founding Director of Engineering to begin in summer 2021. The founding Director, who would be a full-time faculty member, will lead our entry into accredited engineering programs, initially in environmental and civil engineering. These programs would build on our strong presence in the sciences and technology, including growing programs in environmental science and the health sciences, geography, network engineering programs, an innovative cyber-physical systems engineering program, and an industrial design program under development.  Reflecting DePaul’s social justice values, our engineering programs will be undergraduate, providing, through focused recruiting and support, access to and success in engineering careers for a diverse population, regardless of gender, ethnicity, and STEM preparation. We will welcome the inaugural cohort of students in fall 2022.

The directorship is an exciting opportunity for an energetic and committed leader with the vision to build an inclusive program serving not just the elite, but the underserved and the underrepresented, opening doors to successful engineering professions, and graduating diverse students with a commitment to engineering engaged in the community and serving social justice and equity. In refining the proposed curricula now under review, in developing the laboratories and facilities, and in selecting outstanding faculty and staff, the successful candidate will realize this vision and support DePaul’s role as an instrument of achievement for all. This program is a major priority at DePaul and will be funded accordingly.

The successful candidate will have administrative and leadership experience, a strong record of scholarship, and outstanding achievements in teaching. Most of all, the successful candidate will believe in and express the vision of engineering that truly serves all of society and heals our wounded world.

With a total enrollment over 22,000 students, DePaul is one of the largest private non-profit universities in the nation.  Yet the class size in its academic programs typically does not exceed 40 students, reflecting the value the university places on teaching excellence. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

A PhD in a field of engineering, preferably related to Environmental or Civil.

Administrative leadership experience.

Demonstrated record of scholarship and outstanding teaching and service sufficient for appointment with tenure or tenure-track.

Demonstrated record of recruiting, retaining, and guiding diverse populations to successful completion of degree

Preferred Qualifications

Experience establishing internship programs and external community engagement.

Familiarity with ABET accreditation standards.

Commitment to developing innovative curriculum.
