Instructor, Department of Theatre & Dance. University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for an instructor position in Dance Production beginning August 2021.The dance program seeks a production based professional and teacher who will join a team of imaginarians engaged in the work of decolonizing the university and creating new futures for dance. We seek a contributor to the curricular, administrative, service and leadership needs of a thriving and collaborative program.

Who We Are

We are a well-established, nationally recognized dance program that encourages the pursuit of one’s artistic voice, embodied scholarship, and pedagogical exploration. As a team of imaginarians, we use dance and the body to challenge assumptions about practices, values, technology, sustainability and personal and global positionality. Our program scaffolds entrepreneurial approaches to art-making based in personal initiative, curiosity, and versatility. We support the vital cultivation of self-awareness alongside a nuanced appreciation of one’s positionality within a global conversation. Somatic studies serves as the integrative tissue in our highly diverse and forward-thinking program.

Our department is home to three in-house theatres and a community of artists committed to transdisciplinary collaboration. Our 11-member dance faculty has expertise in film production, intermedia performance, transnational fusion, somatics, Hip-hop, reinvention of contemporary forms, technological engagement, West African Dance, Dance of the MENA regions (Middle East/North Africa), imaginative technical production, and sound composition.

Made up of about 120 undergraduate majors/minors and 15 graduate students, the department offers BA, BFA, and MFA degrees in dance as well as BA, BFA, MA and PhD degrees in theatre.

The CU campus is a Tier One Research Institution located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, twenty-five miles from Denver. A recent SMU Data Arts study ranked Boulder in the Top 10 of the most vibrant arts communities among medium-sized cities in the country.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • The Director of Dance Production coordinates technical support for all the Dance Program’s performances and showings, designing, and mentoring student designers for these productions across the academic year. (Approximately 6-8 shows per year).
  • Teach 2 classes per semester in production and design areas across the Dance and Theatre programs.
  • Coordinate practicum students working run crew on dance performances.
  • Collaborate with faculty, guest and student choreographers on the design elements of their work.
  • Interview, hire and supervise 6 - 10 student hourly employees who assist with tasks related to producing the dance concert season. Co-supervise the production Master Electrician.
  • In collaboration with Director of Dance, oversee production budget and season planning. Supervise ongoing maintenance, improvements and operation of stage and classroom including floors, lighting, sound, scenic & video equipment in the dance wing. Serve as Building Proctor for the dance wing.
  • Provide service through participation on department and university committees.


What We Can Offer
The salary range is $52,000 - $56,000. We can offer a signing bonus of $5,000 in lieu of moving expenses and a computer.

What We Require
  • MFA in Performance Design discipline or BFA/BA in Performance Design discipline and experience in professional production and educational production environments.
  • Ability to teach in a design discipline and general production skills.


What We Would Like You To Have
  • Experience in design areas such as Sound Design, Projection Design, Lighting Design or Scenic Design.
  • Software proficiency in QLab, Lightwright, Final Cut Pro, Isadora, Adobe CC, Vector Works, Ableton Live, Logic, FCP, Projection Mapping.
  • Experience with ETC EOS Consoles spatial audio systems, musical theatre audio systems.
  • Expertise in at least one of the following: Screen Dance and video editing, Professional Development, Arts Management, Stage Management.
