Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Dean for Washburn University Institute of Technology ( WIT ), the Assistant/Associate Dean for Technical Education is responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and strategic oversight and development of instructional policies, programming, processes, procedures, and personnel (comprised of approximately 65% of technical faculty and staff). This position works collaboratively with the Dean to ensure overall quality of all career and tech ed academic programs and offerings. In this context, the Assistant/Associate Dean for Technical Education is responsible for all activities involving the creation, maintenance, revision, or deletion of curriculum, courses, sequences of courses, and programs of study offered by the college; all managerial activities related to that curriculum (including periodic assessments, required reporting, and accreditation/licensure requirements); and the support of faculty and students in the delivery of that curriculum. This position works closely with the management team to ensure outstanding service from the Dean’s office is delivered to all instructors, staff, and students. In the absence of the Dean, this position may be asked by the Vice President for Academic Affairs to officially represent Washburn Tech and/or serve as Interim Dean when necessary.

Essential Job Functions of Position

As a member of the Washburn Institute of Technology senior management team, the Assistant/Associate Dean of Technical Education, rank is dependent on experience, is expected to demonstrate professional leadership behavior and support for lifelong learning, and the personal growth and development of instructional staff. The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Providing effective leadership and oversight to all credit programs
• Providing effective leadership and oversight for hiring, orienting, supervision and evaluation of instructors.
• Leading, strategizing and supporting the development of innovative curriculum and programs to meet workforce and industry needs.
• Scheduling and staffing of all courses and approves faculty class schedules.
• Working with the Dean to develop and coordinate academic program budgets.
• Providing oversight for day-to-day support for faculty and addressing faculty concerns.
• Leading the program review process for all credit programs coordinating with Washburn University’s program review processes. Reviewing and resolving curricular and programmatic issues across college campuses.
• Providing leadership, support, and mentoring for all assessment and accreditation activities in the college.
• Creating and enforcing policies, and procedures to ensure quality-driven career and technical education across the Washburn Tech campuses.
• Ensuring program requirements are in compliance with federal, state and local regulations and standards including compliance with the Washburn Board of Regents, Kansas Board of Regents, Higher Learning Commission ( HLC ) and program accreditors and licensers.
• Maintaining an effective working relationship with technical education governing agencies (e.g., Kansas Postsecondary Technical Education Authority Technical Program & Curriculum Committee).
• Ensuring program compliance with Washburn University Policies, Regulations and Procedures.
• Assisting faculty with strategically developing external partnerships which will expand our outreach to potential students and future employers.
• Working with instructors and staff from program areas to promote the development of alternative and innovative delivery formats (e.g., off-campus, on-line, hybrid, and time-shifted) courses and programs.
• Serving as a resource when resolving instructor and/or student issues related to courses and programs.
• Serving as a principal contact point for external partners (e.g., school districts).
• Actively participating with the industry advisory boards for the programs to maintain quality programs developed to meet industry need.
• Assigning instructors and staff to appropriate committees within the college.
• Performing additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Education and Experience

• Master’s degree in education, technical education, higher education administration, or closely related field from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of 5 years of higher education experience with increasing responsibility in curricular and co-curricular development and student success and/or retention.
• Teaching experience at a technical school, 2-year college or university.

PREFERRED :
• Doctorate degree in higher education administration or related field from an accredited institution.
• Proven leadership and management skills
• Knowledge of and experience working with accreditation and licensure agencies; and HLC compliance
