Job Description:

The Department of Africana and Latinx Studies at the State University of New York College at Oneonta invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in Africana and Latinx Studies focusing on the themes of migration and immigration to the United States, legal rights and remedies, discrimination, racism, and redress for Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, and African-American individuals and communities in the U.S. The appointment begins Fall 2021 and is part of a cohort of four new faculty in the School of Liberal Arts whose expertise includes one or more aspects of the African diaspora or the Spanish speaking world. Expectations include, but are not limited to, teaching, research, student advisement, college service, and continuing professional development. The new assistant professor will have the opportunity to participate in cross-disciplinary teaching initiatives.

The Africana and Latinx Studies Department offers a liberal arts focused learning experience for an increasingly diverse undergraduate student body. Founded in 1970, the Africana and Latinx Studies Department is one of a handful in the United States which integrates and maintains the intersections of Black and Latinx Studies. Duties include but not limited to: developing and teaching courses in areas of specialty to include the experience of Afro-Latinx immigrants to the United States, especially from the Caribbean and Latin America in addition to teaching general education and introductory courses in the core curriculum of the program in order to meet department needs. The candidate will also have regular placement in the rotation for the Department's required capstone seminar. Successful candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching an increasingly diverse student body, scholarship, and service, and will participate in cross-disciplinary initiatives.


Requirements:

Required qualifications: PhD or JD with a relevant MA/MS (ABD considered; terminal degree required by time of first renewal notification); expertise in Afro-Latinx and Afro-Caribbean immigration and migration to the U.S.

Preferred: teaching experience that bridges the African-American and Latinx experiences; experience working with Afro-Latinx communities in the US; fluency in Haitian Creole, French, and/or Spanish; understanding of the peoples and culture of the Caribbean and/or Latin America; ability to develop departmentally cross-listed courses; and experience working with diverse populations and/or teaching pedagogies and/or multicultural teaching experience.
