POSITION SUMMARY

Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA), a private Christian institution located in West Palm Beach, Florida, seeks an inspiring and strategic Chair of the Department of Music who will partner with faculty and other leaders to shape, develop, and implement visionary leadership in the areas of curriculum, programming, collaborations, creative activity, and accreditation to further enhance the excellence and vitality of the Department in accordance with the University mission. The Department is currently located in the School of Music & Fine Arts, which includes the Departments of Art, Dance, Music, and Preparatory Department. However, Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Board of Trustees recently voted to merge the School of Music & Fine Arts and the School of Communication & Media to form the College of the Arts, effective August 2021. Programs of study in the College will now include Cinema, Communication, Dance, Digital Media, Gaming, Graphic Design, Journalism, Music, Public Relations, Sports Broadcasting, Theatre, and Visual Art. The Chair of the Department of Music will report to the Dean of the College of the Arts and teach in the area of expertise within the music program with a two course reduction per semester. An instrumentalist to lead the Symphonic Band is preferred, but not required.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Record of administrative experience, including but not limited to budget management and supervising faculty/staff
  • Record of successful teaching, service, and scholarly/creative activity appropriate to rank of Associate Professor or Professor
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills, as well as conflict resolution
  • Commitment to shared governance and consensus building within a university setting
  • Experience with and commitment to building community across and with programs, departments and schools

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An earned doctorate in one of the Department’s disciplines or a closely related field
  • demonstrable history of successful fundraising, community engagement, and academic program development
  • Experience with NASM and accreditation

 

SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES

  • Provide effective leadership in facilitating the vision, goals, and objectives of the Department
  • Oversee and guide departmental curriculum revisions and initiatives
  • Organize and supervise class scheduling and staffing
  • Oversee annual program assessment
  • Teach courses in accordance with assigned workload requirements in an area of expertise
  • Promote professional development and stimulate faculty research
  • Prepare annual reports to the accrediting body (NASM) and oversee the decennial assessment document (last completed in 2019)
  • Maintain and oversee music scholarship assignments
  • Coordinate the work of the Division Coordinators (Instrumental, Keyboard, Voice)
  • Support student recruitment, retention, and progression in collaboration with appropriate offices
  • In consultation with the Dean, manage financial resources, prepare budget documents, and supervise faculty resources
  • Maintain Department governance
  • Represent the Department to the Dean, University, and external community
  • Promote the interests of the Department, both internally and externally

 

The successful candidate will possess interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues and will have a demonstrated commitment to creating, fostering and sustaining a culture that celebrates entrepreneurship, innovation, and collaboration in and out of the classroom. This person will excel in attention to detail, effective oral and written communication, consensus building, creative problem solving, professionalism, and intrinsic work ethic. As the leader of the music unit, the Chair will bring the intellectual capacity, inspiration, and energy required to advance the creative momentum to ensure that the Department’s achievements are broadcast widely and strategically.

The Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music with Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts curricular specializations in music education, performance, composition, music industry, and worship leadership. With more than 43,000 square-feet of performance, classroom, practice, and studio space, the Department of Music is located in the four-story Vera Lea Rinker Hall. Internal performing opportunities include involvement in a variety of ensembles including Concert Choir, Oratorio Chorus, Symphony, Symphonic Band, Pop Rock Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, String Ensemble, World Music Ensemble, and Opera Workshop.
