Georgia Southern University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Undergraduate Instruction and Outreach Librarian. The home campus for this position will be the Armstrong (Savannah) campus.

Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 as a school for teaching modern agricultural production techniques and homemaking skills to rural school children. Its Savannah campus was established in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College for local youth who could not afford to attend college away from home. The Liberty Center in Hinesville was established in 1998 to serve the military and their families at nearby Fort Stewart, the largest military base east of the Mississippi. All three locations came together in 2018 when Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University consolidated. Within this setting, the Undergraduate Instruction and Outreach Librarian is expected to play an energetic, user-oriented, collaborative role in supporting the mission of Georgia Southern University and the Georgia Southern University Libraries Information Literacy program as it continues to evolve to meet the information needs of its three diverse campus communities.
Position Description: Reporting to the Head of Reference and Instruction at Lane Library on the Armstrong campus, the person in this position teaches information literacy (and other associated digital literacies) skills, provides research consultations and chat reference service, and develops and initiates outreach and services focused on lower-division undergraduate students.
This entry level position is a fiscal year (12 month), faculty-rank, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
- Create and initiate outreach efforts focused on lower-division
undergraduate students with a creative approach drawing on
traditional and innovative practices.
- Assist in promotion of undergraduate-focused programming and
assessment in information literacy and the Reference and
- Plan, teach, and assess information literacy classes both
in-person and online, primarily targeted to students in English,
and Writing and Linguistics departments, and other areas as
- Participate in evaluation of the instruction program and
outcome assessment of instruction sessions.
- Collaborate with faculty and other academic professionals in
planning, implementing, teaching, and assessing information
literacy programming generally and in assigned liaison
- Provide quality reference services to library patrons via in
person and/or virtual reference services, including research
- Participate in the development and maintenance of various
instructional and promotional materials, including tutorials,
social media, and other innovative tools.
- Participate in an active liaison program by communicating and
developing relationships with faculty in assigned
- Participate in collection development for general collection
materials and assigned liaison subject areas.
- Demonstrate ability to conduct scholarship, teaching and
service as part of tenure-track responsibilities.
Qualifications - Required:
- Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited
program in library/information studies.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication
- Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity, and
- Commitment to current practices of teaching, learning, and
- Strong commitment to providing courteous service in a
- Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in
instruction and pedagogy.
- Willingness to participate in institutional student success
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse colleagues,
students, and faculty.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States for the
duration of employment without assistance from the
- Must be able to lift 20 lbs, push/pull book cart, and
stand/step/reach/bend as necessary to reach books and journals and
assist library users.
Qualifications - Preferred:
- Experience with working with faculty to design, implement, and
assess information literacy.
- Knowledge of assessment and evaluation methods in Information
- Knowledge of instructional planning and design.
- Some experience teaching information literacy to
- Experience with reference and bibliographic
- Experience using online platforms such as Zoom, learning
management systems, and video creation software.
- Experience using the Springhare platform and
- Knowledge of visual communication or graphic design
- Skills in promoting and marketing programs to the university
