Search for the Dean

School of Filmmaking

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) seeks an inspiring and innovative individual to assume the role of Dean of the School of Filmmaking (Film). UNCSA is North Carolina’s only university devoted entirely to training talented students to become professional artists. Ranked among the best film schools in the country, UNCSA seeks a Dean who understands the evolving landscapes of all content production, including film, television, animation, and immersive entertainment, with a passion to engage and manage an academic unit supporting the next generation of artists in the entertainment industry. The next Dean will optimize the School’s existing assets to help shape and drive a strategic vision for its next chapter, engaging faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the larger community.

Founded in 1963 as America’s first public arts conservatory, North Carolina School of the Arts has since developed a justly deserved international reputation. Located within Winston Salem’s vibrant visual and performing arts community, UNCSA provides gifted emerging artists with the experience, knowledge, and skills needed to excel in their disciplines and in their lives. UNCSA enrolls more than 1,300 students across its five arts schools, which are the schools of Dance, Design & Production, Drama, Filmmaking, and Music, as well as the undergraduate Division of Liberal Arts and the High School Academic Program.

The School of Filmmaking is an integral member of the University community, emphasizing a unique approach to teaching across undergraduate and graduate degree programs with small class sizes and a hands-on learning experience. The School enrolls 320 undergraduate (BFA) students in the areas of animation, cinematography, directing, picture editing and sound design, producing, production design, visual effects and screenwriting. At the graduate level, the School trains 43 MFA students in three disciplines: creative producing, film music composition, and screenwriting.

Reporting directly to the Provost, the new Dean will be a respected collaborator in the field of film, television or media arts who can build and support the faculty, deliver excellent education to students, and enhance School resources, with an eye towards shaping a range of forward-looking programs into the next era of excellence. The Dean will be expected to foster partnerships within the School of Filmmaking, across the UNCSA community, including alumni, and throughout the artistic and creative industries.
