Assistant Professor, Student Development Administration (Tenure-track)

The Department of Leadership and Professional Studies in the College of Education at Seattle University seeks applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure track) to join the Student Development Administration (SDA) Program. The position begins September 2021 (potential for summer 2021 teaching). The SDA program is committed to delivering a holistic educational experience that will empower students to assume leadership roles in student affairs. We seek a faculty colleague who is committed to working in a high-touch, practitioner-based program that provides intentional advising and mentoring of students for entry-level student affairs roles.

The SDA program currently has two graduate degree tracks: M.Ed. and MA. We recruit nationally, and currently have 60 master’s students and over 500 alumni. Our program is selective and 40%+ identify as students of color or hold additional minoritized identities. The program voluntarily complies with the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) standards. We have a strong partnership with the university’s Division of Student Development, other colleges in the region (open access colleges, 4-year institutions, etc.), and educational access organizations (college access and scholarship programs). We offer graduate assistantships in multiple functional areas. The SDA program is actively engaged with NASPA and the National Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP).

Responsibilities will include teaching, service and maintaining an active scholarly agenda. Teaching may include face-to-face, online or hybrid courses, and community-engaged learning experiences (community-based learning/research and service-learning). Additional curricular responsibilities include: academic advising, curriculum development, continuous improvement activities, electronic portfolios, alumni engagement, and professional formation. Desired areas of teaching include: leadership, leadership and governance in higher education, higher education finance, higher education law, capstone seminar, and advanced courses in multicultural education and social justice. Service is primarily to the SDA program and may include additional leadership at the national, state, and/or local professional associations, developing partnerships with other universities and non-profit organizations, and, the college, the university, and/or greater community. Scholarship is defined broadly, may include quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, community-based research, recognizes multiple designs and methodologies, and includes grant writing. We are especially interested in scholars whose scholarship focuses on student affairs leadership and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

Minimum Requirements:

• Earned doctorate in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field by August 2021
• Two years of full-time administrative experience in student affairs
• Demonstrated understanding of, commitment to, and ability to teach to the university mission
• Demonstrated ability to work and teach collaboratively in team settings
• Demonstrated interest to participate in university interdisciplinary research in areas such as the Seattle University Youth Initiative, LIFT SU, and Middle College High School
• Demonstrated ability to integrate DEI and theory-to-practice research in teaching, service, and scholarship
• Demonstrated ability to teach graduate level courses in: leadership, leadership and governance in higher education, higher education finance, higher education law, capstone seminar, and/or advanced courses in social justice
• Demonstrated experience with scholarship in student affairs leadership and DEI
• Demonstrated potential for strong productivity in research and grant writing

Preferred:

• Candidates with sustained engagement with minoritized communities that are underrepresented in higher education, and demonstrated ability to integrate this asset into program development and teaching
• Five years of full-time administrative experience in student affairs
• Leadership experience in national student affairs organizations (NASPA, ACPA, etc.)
• Evidence of successful teaching and advising at the graduate level

Salary:  The salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
