University Background:


Basic Function:
Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary (PLTS) of California Lutheran University, a seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and a founding member of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA, invites applicants for the full-time position of Lecturer in New Testament Studies beginning August 2021. This non-tenure-track full-time position is renewable on an annual basis. In addition to the primary teaching areas of New Testament scholarship and Greek, secondary teaching areas may include early Christian history, pastoral care, or constructive theology. The lecturer is also expected to contribute to the life of the PLTS community via committee service, advising, and worship leadership. While the position centers in the seminary's residential teaching program, the lecturer should have facility to engage in online pedagogy.

PLTS prepares leaders for church and society who are grounded in life-giving relationship with God; growing in the arts of faith-based social transformation; courageous in contextual ministry that is attentive to dynamics of race, class, gender and ecology; and intellectually astute and curious. We seek a scholar who connects the academy and the church, draws students into the task of relating biblical texts to Christian life and ministry in the world, and employs critical hermeneutical methodologies that draw out the relation of sacred texts to living questions found in contemporary contexts.


Representative Duties:
*Teach foundational and elective Master’s level courses in New Testament in the ecumenical and interreligious GTU.
*Teach foundational and elective Master’s level courses in Greek in the ecumenical and interreligious GTU.
*Teach in online modalities.
*To engage with the pastoral and formational processes of candidates preparing for ministry, ordained and lay.


Knowledge Of:
*Teaching in online modalities.
*Integrated understanding of different aspects of theological education


Ability To:
*Work with colleagues in all aspects of graduate professional theological education
*Engage in continuing education in an ecumenical setting
*Connect the academy and the church,
*Draw students into the task of relating biblical texts to Christian life and ministry in the world,
*Employ critical hermeneutical methodologies that draw out the relation of sacred texts to living questions found in contemporary contexts.


Minimum Qualifications:
Because the seminary and university aspire to become leaders among their peer institutions in making meaningful and lasting progress responding to the needs and concerns of racial/ethnic minorities, we seek candidates who can mentor African-American or Latino(a) students and are able to teach courses that deepen student and faculty awareness regarding power dynamics related to race/ethnicity. ABD candidates for a Ph.D. in New Testament will be considered.


Preferred Qualifications:
*The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in New Testament.
*Spanish-speaking ability will be considered an asset.
