Dean of the Graduate School of Education

Fordham University invites applications and nominations for the position of dean of the Graduate School of Education (GSE). The new dean will have an extraordinary opportunity to advance GSE’s mission; enhance its commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service; and heighten its impact and national prominence while positioning the School to succeed in a dynamic and increasingly competitive environment.

A large and important school that is deeply in the service of and tied to the City of New York, Fordham University's Graduate School of Education ranks in the top 15 private schools of education nationally and second among Catholic schools of education. In keeping with the University’s Jesuit tradition of rigorous academics, service to complex urban and metropolitan communities, leadership in global education, and dedication to the intellectual, moral, and socioemotional development of the individual, GSE's greatest strengths lie in its commitment to educating for justice, sense of community, outstanding faculty, staff and students, and location in the City, home of the largest public school and Catholic school systems in the United States. Located on Fordham's Lincoln Center campus, GSE enrolls approximately 890 students. With 25 masters, six doctoral, and 11 certificate programs, GSE prepares students to be teachers, counselors, psychologists, school administrators, and other educational practitioners and scholars who serve diverse populations. With approximately 37 tenured and tenure-track professors and 34 adjuncts, the School’s faculty includes prominent educators from nearly every aspect of graduate education.

The dean is the chief executive and academic officer for the School and reports to the provost. Joining a talented and experienced University-wide team of deans that works together closely and well, the dean will be highly collaborative and passionately committed to the social justice mission of the University. The incoming dean will work to leverage the School's many strengths and identify partnerships both internally and externally that will enhance, support, and grow GSE’s programs. The dean will also be called to think creatively about developing new revenue streams and how best to anticipate and respond to post-pandemic challenges and opportunities facing the University and School alike.

Fordham was founded as a Catholic institution in 1841 and was entrusted to the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1846. As a world-class comprehensive research institution, Fordham attracts a diverse population of more than 16,900 students who are taught by a full-time faculty of approximately 790 in nine schools on campuses in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Westchester County in New York.

Candidates for this position must have an outstanding record of scholarly and educational achievement; a history of successful administrative experience; a commitment to the University's Jesuit mission; demonstrated impact in access, inclusion, equity, and diversity; a record of advancing teaching excellence, scholarship, and service; and the capacity to be a skilled fundraiser, community builder, and networker. Candidates must be eligible at appointment for a tenured position at the rank of full professor.
