 The University of Central Florida Libraries is seeking an innovative and experienced leader to facilitate the identification and implementation of best practices in three departments: Acquisitions and Collections, Cataloging, and Resource Sharing.  The successful candidate will have significant experience in one or more of these areas as well as in strategic planning, project management, process analysis, assessment, and integrated library management systems.  The position requires strong analytical and decision-making skills, an orientation toward new and developing practices, and an ability to achieve concrete results by motivating and empowering staff and colleagues.  A record of professional participation, knowledge of issues and trends, and the ability to represent UCF Libraries at all levels is essential.  The associate director reports to the dean of UCF Libraries and participates in library-wide planning, policy making, and development and evaluation of services.

 Responsibilities: 

  • Plans and leads implementation of services in cataloging, metadata, acquisitions, collection management, serials management, electronic resources, licensing, and resource sharing;
  • Enhances service quality, outcomes, and operational efficiency;
  • Advocates for three department heads, seven faculty librarians, and nineteen support staff;
  • Cultivates effective working relationships with all constituents;
  • Represents UCF Libraries through collaboration in a wide range of consortia and partnerships at the university, state, regional, and national levels.

 Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution;
  • A minimum of five years of post-MLS experience successfully managing or supervising in technical services or resource sharing in an academic library.  

Preferred:

  • Substantial operational experience in technical services, collections, and resource sharing;
  • Familiarity with technology, standards, and trends in acquisitions, cataloging, and resource sharing, with expertise in one or more of these areas;
  • Understanding of information technology applications such as Ex Libris/ALMA (or other integrated library management systems), ERMS, link resolvers, discovery services, or ILLiad;
  • Experience with budgeting, collection assessment, licensing, and vendor relationships;
  • Knowledge of current trends in streaming videos, e-books, data sets, and other emerging content;
  • Awareness of copyright, textbook affordability, and other relevant scholarly communication issues in academic libraries;
  • Proven leadership and success in project management, assessment, and reporting;
  • Experience supervising employees from multiple departments and managing interdepartmental projects;
  • Commitment to establishing inclusive, collegial, positive working relationships in a diverse community;
  • Management style that empowers others and promotes a dynamic, robust, collaborative work environment;
  • Ability to apply leadership, analytical, and decision-making skills to produce outcomes aligned with the institutional mission; 
  • Record of significant activities representing libraries at local, state, regional, and national levels;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Record of scholarship, service, and professional activities.

 Environment:  With more than 71,000 students, the University of Central Florida is the largest university by enrollment in Florida and one of the largest universities in the nation, offering 103 bachelor’s, 91 master’s, and 34 doctoral programs.  The UCF Libraries houses a collection of more than 2.1 million volumes, 220,000 e-books, and 54,000 serials and is a partial depository for government documents and patents.  The library materials budget is approximately $7 million.  Full-time staffing of 110 includes forty-six faculty librarians.  For more information about the UCF Libraries see http://library.ucf.edu 

 Salary and Rank: Commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position with insurance and retirement benefits, paid annual and sick days,  holidays, and no state income tax.
