General Summary/Purpose

Responsible for registration of patient data and processing of bills for the Pathology Department of The Johns Hopkins University. Responsible for verification of registration information in the JHM and JHU electronic applications (i.e. EPIC). Verify and register patient demographics into the electronic patient record system. Handle adjustments and account inquiries. Identify charge entry issues and assist in the resolution of claim edits.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Procedural Knowledge:

  • Review charges for questionable or incomplete information and following departmental compliance procedures take appropriate action.
  • Register patients into the electronic patient record system.
  • Monitor patient record system billing reports and investigates and solves registration problems.
  • Maintain proper records and files of activities.
  • Review and correct system work queues: Registration, Coding and Encounter.
  • Understandingof ICD and CPT and apply to work related function.
  • Ability to analyze information and make recommendations to management.

    Technical Knowledge:
  • Comprehensive knowledge and compliance of HIPAA rules and regulations in the dissemination of patient Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Working knowledge of Johns Hopkins Applications.
  • Utilize online resources to facilitate efficient claims processing.

Professional & Personal Development:

  • Participate in on-going educational activities.
  • Assist in the training of staff.
  • Keep current of industry changes by reading assigned material on work related topics.
  • Complete three days of training annually.

Department Specific Responsibilities:

  • Performs assigned duties as listed in this job description for the Department of Pathology which may include but is not limited Johns Hopkins Medical Laboratories, Green Spring Station & other outreach Laboratories, Johns Hopkins Reference Laboratories, Professional Fee Billing, and other areas as assigned (ex: IVF Lab at GreenSpring, Genetics DNA Lab, Dermapathology)

Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements:

Able to operate basic office equipment, e.g. photo copier, fax machine, scanner, PC, telephone, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

HS/GED and one year experience in a medical billing or related environment. Additional education beyond minimum experience qualifications may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

* JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of various payer processing and submission guidelines preferred.

Ability to use various billing and patient information computer systems preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills.

Work Environment while performing the duties of this job:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position (mostly seated) up to 80% of the time. Occasionally required to traverse throughout the work area or to retrieve supplies or mail/documents from other locations. The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, mouse, calculator, and phone 80% of the day; additional duties may require opening envelopes, removing or applying staples, processing mail; requiring finger dexterity and some repetitive motions.
  • Prolonged vision requirements including ability to see/viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts.
  • Position requires frequent use of the telephone, while multi-tasking to retrieve or review information from the computer in order to assist callers quickly and confidentially. Must be able to communicate using the spoken and written word in a clear, concise, and professional manner. Able to hear within normal range.
  • May transport materials usually less than 20 pounds from one area to another; may be required to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: file boxes, copier paper, mail bags). In some areas work space is confined; may work in an open work station or cubicle.
  • Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must insure compliance with Hospital Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
