Position Summary

The University of Georgia’s International Center in Cortona, Italy, is conducting a search for a resident instructor in Art History at the rank of Lecturer for its 2021/2022 programs. The start date for this position will be in August 2021 for the Fall semester and is expected to last through Summer 2022. This prestigious University of Georgia classroom and studio fine art program has been operating in Cortona, Italy for over 50 years. The successful candidate will be responsible for a mid-level survey of Italian Renaissance Art (ARHI3020), which is taught at the UGA Cortona Center, in local museums, and on site in cities, such as: Naples, Rome, Florence, Venice, Siena, Arezzo, Volterra, Perugia and many others. The candidate will also teach a second course at a lower or more advanced level in accordance with the Cortona program’s needs.

As part of the UGA Cortona programmatic structure, the Art Historian provides in classroom instruction and co-leads program excursions and site visits to many locations such as: Cortona, Rome, Florence, Siena, Venice, Naples, Assisi, Perugia, and other locations. On-site lectures and academic content provided by the Art Historian are woven into the curriculum and contact hours for UGA Cortona programs. The Art Historian will also serve as a year-round staff position to ensure program participant safety as well as quality instruction when touring UGA Cortona groups to various sites and cities. Gained programmatic knowledge provides logistical consistency (planning and execution) for all Cortona programs, especially when operating multiple, overlapping programs at the International Center.

Salary is expected to be $39,000 but will be based on qualifications and experience. Besides a base salary, the Cortona program is able to underwrite the instructor’s expenses for airline tickets (at least one round trip, trans-Atlantic flight), a stipend for lodging, and some meals with students and faculty.

Additional Requirements

PhD in Art History. ABD candidates will be considered and will need to provide documentation that all requirements for the degree have been met and that the degree will be conferred by December 2021 at the time of hire.

Candidates should have a demonstrated proficiency in teaching survey curricula. Candidate should possess strong communication skills, especially within group and communal environments. Speaking and writing proficiency in English and Italian and familiarity with major cities in Italy preferred.

Teach 2 Art History courses during Cortona’s Fall and Spring semester-long programs and the Summer Thru program. Courses include onsite lectures/visits as contact hours (overnight and day-long excursions); Teach one Art History component of Cortona’s Science & Art History Maymester program; Assist with La Mostra – student/faculty exhibition held at the conclusion of each Fall, Spring and Summer program.

Provide Administrative/Logistical support for the Cortona Fall and Spring semester long programs and the Summer Thru program; Collaborate with UGA Cortona Director, OGE International Center support team, Associate Director and Cortona Office Manager to prepare programmatic information and documents such as ( but not limited to) Program “Emergency Response Kit”, Student/Faculty Manifest, Medical Information, Room Assignments, Scholarship Recipients, List of Program Participant Information and Passport Copies, verify course registration, course rolls, grade submission, resolve discrepancies with course rolls, work with OGE International Center support team to assist faculty (especially non UGA ) with grade submission, course evaluations, or other administrative facets of academic coordination, assist with programmatic issues by attending group dinners when appropriate, assist with pre-semester prep for group arrival (prep of dormitory facility, class rooms, studios), pre-semester prep for scheduling/itinerary, including overnight trips, day excursions, reservations, logistics for moving group from site to site, city to city, museum to monument, etc., general workings of International Center and programmatic operations, and support on-site staff in event of emergency
