Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Director of Institutional Effectiveness will fulfill a critical role in the success of UNCW and will oversee and advocate for best practices in Institutional Effectiveness activities, such as, but not limited to: Campus-wide assessment and continuous improvement initiatives, SACSCOC Accreditation monitoring and compliance, Faculty Activity Reporting, Course Evaluations, Process Improvement, and Strategic Plan monitoring.

The Director will report directly to the Associate Provost for Institutional Research & Planning and work in collaboration with other campus leaders in making critical decisions that promote strategic advancement of a culture of assessment while also ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations pertaining to accreditation. The position will supervise a team of professionals within the Office of Institutional Research & Planning (currently three) who are tasked with the daily support, management, and implementation of institutional effectiveness initiatives.

The position will have delegated authority from the Associate Provost for decisions, management and analysis regarding assessment processes and accreditation compliance. The position will work with the University Assessment Council to ensure institutional effectiveness. The position will have significant administrative responsibilities and duties providing expert advice and counsel to senior leadership to support the assessment of student learning and program outcomes, ensuring compliance with SACSCOC institutional effectiveness standards and providing assistance for academic and non-academic accrediting standards as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

A Master’s degree in social or behavioral sciences, math/statistics, education, or other relevant area from an appropriately accredited institution is required with at least five years’ experience in assessment, accreditation compliance and/or institutional effectiveness.

Must possess strong analytic, writing, interpersonal and computer skills, along with the demonstrated ability to summarize and present complex analysis of data to varied audience and constituents.
Demonstrate familiarity with assessment and accreditation compliance software. Strong interpersonal qualifications and higher education experience working directly with faculty and non-academic staff in educational program assessment.

Relevant Experience includes:
(1) coordination and understanding of assessment processes,
(2) project and change management,
(3) knowledge and understanding of accreditation processes and requirements, and
(4) advanced computing skills necessary to analyze, interpret, and manipulate data relevant to comprehensive institutional effectiveness and planning.

The position demands solid organizational skills, demonstrable knowledge of accreditation compliance and standards, excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to work independently, attend to multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively with administrative personnel for decision making. Supervisory experience is essential.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

A Ph.D. (or terminal degree) in social or behavioral sciences, math/statistics, education, or other relevant areas is strongly preferred. Service as a SACSCOC Liaison (or liaison for another regional accrediting body) is preferred.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The primary purpose of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning is to collect, maintain and provide official information about the University to meet both internal and external demands for mandated and ad hoc requests while also monitoring policies and processes related to space utilization, assessment and accreditation compliance. Both mandated and Ad hoc requests can be internal (i.e. an Academic Department or Faculty Senate) or external (i.e. UNC System Office, US News and World Report or Delaware Study) The Office is considered a university-wide resource as it provides information about and to all departments within the organization in some form or another. Strategically, the Office is charged with providing research expertise and strategies to study and measure issues within numerous areas on campus including but not limited to enrollment management; enrollment budget planning; student success; space planning and management, and student, faculty and staff satisfaction and perceptions. The Office is purposed to ultimately provide the Chief Executive, the Chief Academic Officer, and other institutional senior leaders with timely, accurate and relevant research to positively impact policy decision making across the University.
