A Post-doctoral Associate position is available for Physics to work in a project on the Experimental Condensed Matter - Materials synthesis and characterization led by Dr. Hamlin and Dr. Meisel in the Department of Physics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida. This postdoctoral position is linked to DOE funding to study the influence of combined high-temperature/high-magnetic-field processing in the microstructure and properties of materials used in modern manufacturing of heavy equipment. The work will involve the synthesis of various model materials in high magnetic fields, and the subsequent characterization of the microstructural and physical properties. The results will test numerical studies which will guide the path of iterating the composition of the starting material and the annealing conditions. The work will be performed in a collaborative group setting that spans several sites and disciplines. Communication skills for disseminating the results within the team communication framework and during virtual, internal discussions, and subsequently in potential publications are important requirements of the position, which will be supervised by James Hamlin and co-supervised by Mark Meisel. The position requires a PhD degree at the time of appointment, which can begin on or after March 1, 2021, but preferably before May 31, 2021. Experience with materials synthesis (via molten flux, solid state reaction, Bridgman, and/or vapor transport methods) and with analysis of x-ray diffraction (XRD) data.

Preferred: Experience with XRD and/or Neutron Diffraction at national or international labs/facilities; with SQUID magnetometry, ac magnetic susceptibility, and/or differential thermal analysis measurements; and with microprobe, TEM, SEM, and related spectroscopies.
