Assistant Professor - Counselor Education - 16815
The Department of Counselor Education in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of clinical mental health with expertise in couples and families counseling, for a start date of August 2021. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching graduate courses in the Counselor Education program, developing a strong research agenda, and a commitment to providing service in the university and community.
The successful applicant will join a group of committed and vibrant faculty who deliver cutting-edge learning opportunities to a diverse student body. They will teach core courses in counselor education, through a rigorous academic curriculum that includes experiential and self-reflective learning. The candidate is expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages graduate students, results in publications, and contributes to advancing the department, university, counseling profession, and society. The candidate will also participate in service activities and embrace the principles of diversity and inclusion as a member of the university community. Ability to work with Spanish speaking clients and staff is a plus. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation and experience
- Earned doctorate in counselor education preferably from a CACREP-accredited program and a background in clinical mental health. Consideration will be given to a related doctoral degree that includes experience as a full-time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013. Candidates who are ABD will also be considered; however, they must have completed their degree by the contract start date in August 2021. Otherwise, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2022 in advance of their first scheduled review.

- Service as an active member of the university community and a commitment to social justice is imperative
- Eligible for licensure as an LPC in the state of Wisconsin
- Candidates should have the potential to develop or maintain a clear research agenda and the capacity to attract external funding
- Counseling experience is strongly preferred
- Preference will be given to persons with a specialty in couples and families counseling
- Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
- Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
Responsibilities include teaching core courses in counselor education, courses in the clinical mental health counseling emphasis, and couples and families counseling as appropriate. Providing service to the university, participating in department leadership (e.g. department chair, program coordinator, clinical coordinator), advising students, and providing community service. It also includes supervision of students in practicum and internship utilizing our state-of-the-art clinic and expanded social justice oriented partnerships; implementing program requirements; and participating in research and grant writing activities. Ability to infuse technology into instruction, e.g., web-based course offerings is preferred. Openness to working with diverse populations is essential.
The Counselor Education Department has seven full-time faculty members and a counseling services manager. The master's program includes a 60-credit program for Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a 60-credit program for School Counseling. The counseling program has been accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and other Related Educational Programs (CACREP) since 2000. The school counseling program is also approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
