The School of Music at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track Music Theory Assistant Professor. The music theory area offers 33 courses each year in an active program with about 340 undergraduate majors, 60 graduate students, and 200 music minors. We revised the music theory curriculum for the 2020-2021 academic year to become modular and menu-based as part of our effort to diversify the kinds of music and analytical methodologies we teach. An outline of the curriculum appears on our website (http://sites.google.com/jmumusictheory). We teach alongside 44 full-time faculty and 47 part-time faculty in a school that produces more than 250 performances and presentations annually, promoting a vibrant culture of research, scholarship, and creative activity. Housed within the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the School of Music offers the Bachelor of Music in music performance, music education, composition, music theatre, and music industry; Master’s degrees in composition, conducting, music education, and performance; and Doctoral degrees in Performance, Pedagogy and Literature and Conducting.

With approximately 22,000 students, JMU is located in Harrisonburg, a diverse city in Virginia’s beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley, 130 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The College of Visual and Performing Arts brings together the Schools of Art, Design, and Art History; Theatre and Dance; and Music. With over 90 full-time faculty and 1,200 majors, the CVPA comprises a vital and collaborative artistic community.

Teach written theory within a modular core curriculum, and aural skills within a sequenced curriculum. Offer graduate and undergraduate seminars in music theory whose topics reflect the wide range of interests of students both within and outside of Western classical music. Perform research, preferably in an area that differs from that of current faculty. Provide service to the school, college, and university, especially in a way that brings unique perspectives and values to the institution.

Applicants must be ABD in Music Theory, hold the PhD in Music Theory, or have equivalent professional experience. Applicants should also demonstrate success teaching collegiate music theory; show motivation to engage in meaningful and deliberate discussion about how music theory course offerings can continue to be modified and expanded to address the changing landscape of music higher education, especially in relation to recent calls for more diverse and inclusive pedagogy; provide evidence of an active record, or potential to develop an active record, of research in music theory that differs from the interests of current faculty, including (but not limited to) such things as: non-Western music, Jazz, 20th- and 21st-century music, cognition, popular music, film music, video game music, and disability studies.
