Assistant Teaching Professor of Biology

The University of Washington Tacoma (UW Tacoma) invites applicants for one full-time non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor in Biology position in the Division of Sciences and Mathematics (SAM) within the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (SIAS). This is a full-time renewable teaching position with an appointment term of one to five years and a nine-month service period beginning September 16, 2021.  All University of Washington Teaching Professor-rank faculty engage in teaching, student mentorship, and service, but have no research expectations. This position includes faculty voting rights but is not tenure-eligible.

The Tacoma campus of the University of Washington was founded in 1990 with an interdisciplinary approach at its core. The successful candidate will engage with culturally diverse populations in higher education, integrate a variety of evidence-based and inclusive pedagogical techniques and curricular perspectives into teaching and learning, and mentor students from underrepresented backgrounds in the sciences. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a dedication to effective, evidence-based teaching practices for lower-division biology lectures and laboratories in our Introductory Biology sequence (TBIOL 120, 130, and 140; especially TBIOL 140, covering organismal and systems-level biology and physiology), and core upper division lectures and laboratories required for the B.S. degree in Biomedical Sciences (https://www.tacoma.uw.edu/sias/sam/tbiomd; particularly TBIOL 302: Human Physiology and/or TBIOL 305: Genetics and Genomics). There will also be opportunities to develop upper division elective courses in the Biomedical Sciences degree based on the successful candidate’s area of expertise.

The position requires a minimum of a Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in biology (or a related field), and teaching expertise as an instructor and/or as a teaching assistant at the university or college level.

Compensation is competitive with comparable positions and includes health insurance and retirement benefits.
