The American Indian Policy Institute (AIPI) in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at Arizona State University invite applications for a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible, Research Professional beginning in January 2021.

 

Description of Institute

The American Indian Policy Institute (AIPI) was formed in 2006 and is the first Tribal think-tank in the nation. AIPI’s policy focus is substantively on telecommunications and communications policy as they impact sovereign Tribal nations. We seek to compliment this expertise with other areas. We have been extremely successful at leveraging and expanding our partnerships with other ASU schools including schools such as Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the Law School’s Indian Legal Program, the Thunderbird School of Global Management, as well as other programs, centers, and institutes and external community organizations. Our partnerships have enabled us to expand our capacity on much needed work in areas including, but not limited to energy, health,

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The ideal candidate is an experienced researcher with a good working knowledge of the intricate interactions among the Federal Government regulatory environment (including agencies such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian Education, U.S. Census Bureau, Federal Communications Commission, National Telecommunications and Information Administration), American Indian and Alaska Native Tribal Governments, and tribal special interest organizations such as the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI). Under administrative direction, according to established topical AIPI policy priority guidelines, the candidate will conduct research, which includes developing, maintaining and analyzing information and information systems for decisions based on key findings of research initiatives. This position involves considerable interaction and communication with management units throughout the university, external agencies and public and private sector representatives.

Essential Duties:

  • Administering research, including coordination and communication with university and public and private sector teams and stakeholders;
  • Designing, conducting, and analyzing original quantitative and qualitative research;
  • Preparing project reports and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications and making academic and public presentations;
  • Assisting with long-term data management and archiving;
  • Creating and maintaining databases utilizing various computer programming languages or user-oriented software, such as R, Stata, SPSS, SAS, and/or GIS;
  • Utilize programs, such as the Google Work Suite, Microsoft Office, EndNote, and other commonly used work programs;
  • May perform or assist in the delivery of presentations, write articles and technical reports; and
  • The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university and

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, or related field OR
  • Masters of Jurisprudence or Master of Legal Studies (preferred emphasis in American

Indian Law)

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • PhD in Public Policy, Public Administration, or related field
  • Demonstrated academic interests and experience publishing in one or more of the following tribal topics: agriculture, health, telecommunications, economic development, census, environmental/natural resource management;
  • Experience in working on Indian policy and/or with American Indian/Alaska Native tribal governments or communities;
  • Experience (3 years) in conducting research and writing reports on American Indian issues;
  • Expertise in community-based approaches;
  • Experience with large research projects;
  • The ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others on a multi- disciplinary research team;
  • Research skills and experiences in intensive interviewing, survey design, and qualitative coding; and
  • Excellent organizational and communication (oral and written) skills (including spoken/written English).

Salary and Benefits

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a benefits-eligible, full time, 12-month position. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the opportunity for renewal contingent on the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.
