Position Summary:

The Horticulture Outreach Specialist is an integral part of the UW-Madison Division of Extension and works alongside the people of Wisconsin to improve lives and communities. Extension serves the people and communities of Wisconsin by addressing local, statewide and national issues, improving lives through research-based education, fostering partnerships and action, and facilitating positive impacts.

The primary purpose of the Horticulture Outreach Specialist is to be a leader in providing horticulture programmatic instruction. In order to implement effective programs, this position will and applying research findings, supporting partners and Extension faculty and academic staff with education and outreach efforts related to horticulture programming. This is done through assessment of local, regional and statewide needs and designing, delivering, and evaluating research-based educational programming and services to meet these needs.

This position is a part of the Division of Extensions Agriculture Institute. The Agriculture Institute facilitates and develops research-based educational programs and informational materials around agricultural and horticultural topics for businesses, individuals and families in Wisconsin.

This dynamic position has an emphasis in delivering Horticulture Programing including:
1. Community Horticulture; such as but not limited to food donation gardens, horticultural therapy, display gardens, and outreach programming to targeted audiences (i.e. vulnerable populations);
2. Coordinating a consistent framework for horticulture diagnostic services
3. Assist with education delivery and coordination of the Master Gardener Program, as appropriate

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Required: Bachelors degree in a field related to the programming focus, such as horticulture, plant science, plant pathology, botany or other related fields.

Preferred: Masters degree in a field related to the programming focus, such as horticulture, plant science, plant pathology, botany or other related fields.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Required:
1. Ability to communicate effectively using a variety of methods and technology; and
2. Ability to effectively work with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.

Preferred:
1. Three years of work experience relevant to the programmatic responsibilities of the position;
2. Experience with building diverse, collaborative partnerships that support horticultural programming
3. Demonstrated educational program development skills including planning and implementing programs; evaluating learning experiences; and communicating program impact and value to stakeholders
4. Demonstrated experience using collaborative leadership to accomplish project goals, including the ability to convene and facilitate diverse groups of stakeholders
5. Demonstrated skills in interpreting, utilizing and applying evidence-based information and research findings
6. Demonstrated educational program management skills including budget development and fiscal resource management
7. Ability to write grants and establish partnerships that pool or leverage public and private funds in support of the Institutional mission
8. Strong interpersonal relationship and problem-solving skills in a team setting

Additional Information:

1. The primary accountability relationship for this position is the Area Director for supervision, compensation and benefits and performance reviews
2. This positions primary programming focus is in Sauk County; however, some programming will also be conducted over a broader geographical area.
3. Office location and programming coverage is contingent on county funding support and location may be reassigned to align with county and Extension programming priorities.
4. Expectation to make arrangements for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions;
5. Work evenings or weekends as needed to meet programming needs
