UM Housing invites applications for a Journeyman Electrician to join their team on campus. The Journeyman Electrician will install, maintain, and repair various types of electrical equipment. This position requires the ability to work well with other crafts to complete projects and communicate well with others. Needs to be able to work with little supervision and have excellent trouble shooting skills. The Journeyman Electrician tasks will include researching and ordering materials, good customer service, and the ability to handle multiple priorities. This position requires incumbent to develop working knowledge of the UM Housing department electrical system: and will be required to obtain the NICET Fire Alarm Certification.

This position requires incumbent to obtain the NICET Fire Alarm Certification.

Required Skills
  • Ability to assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, motors, equipment, appliances apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools
  • Working knowledge and ability installing conduit, ducts, tract, and raceways inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables to complete circuits between devices
  • working knowledge and ability to diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of the breakdown and correct the problem
  • Working knowledge and ability to connect wires to control panels, circuit breakers, transformers, or other components
  • Working knowledge and ability to install conduit wire mold and wire, size circuits, bend conduit up to and pull wire
  • Experience installing CAT-5 and CAT-6 data lines- must be able to certify and punch down lines on blocks
  • Proficiency at repairing motor control circuits. Proficiency at repairing appliances, refrigerators, washers, dryers, vacuums, extractors, buffers, etc.
  • Proficiency at reading and interpreting blueprints
  • Working knowledge and ability to adapt industry standards and equipment to provide service to special needs projects
  • Knowledge of safety rules and procedure related to the trade and abide by all OSHA safety regulations
  • Ability to make prints and electrical schematics of equipment
  • Ability to receive written and oral requests
  • Must be able to communicate with campus community about electrical jobs. Must possess good customer skills
  • Must be able to use a variety of test equipment


Physical Requirements

(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)

  • Lifting: Ground to 36 inches, up to 50 lbs. Ground to 72 inches, 30 lbs.
  • Carrying: Front carry up to 50 lbs. for 100 feet or less.
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (pushing and pulling materials, and during the use of tools): 30 lbs. sustained.
  • Repetitive squatting on both even and uneven surfaces.
  • Overhead horizontal push sustained, 30 lbs.
  • Overhead work with a twist, 3-minutes sustained.
  • Static forward bending from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
  • Trunk rotation from a standing or kneeling position.
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder.
  • Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 50 lbs. of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100 lbs.).
  • Use of foot controls and hand controls to drive and operate light and heavy machinery.


Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment .

Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma and four (4) years’ experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience


Preferred Qualifications
  • NICET Fire Alarm Certification
  • Working knowledge of high voltage systems
  • Working knowledge of variable frequency drives and the ability to test and repair and program VFD's
  • Working knowledge and repair of emergency generators, high efficiency furnaces, and fire alarm systems

Position Details

Position Title: Journeyman Electrician

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, 12 months/year.

Salary: $27.98/hr

Union Affiliation: Electric Workers Local 768

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
