DEAN OF SCIENCE
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites
applications and nominations for the position of Dean of
Science.
The University
Founded in 1991, HKUST is a highly regarded international research
university dedicated to the advancement of learning, research,
scholarship and the education of the new generation of
front-runners through strong programs in science, engineering,
business & management, humanities & social science,
interdisciplinary studies. With strong emphasis on education,
research and knowledge transfer, it has a vision of becoming a
leading global University with significant impact and strong
commitment in the region. HKUST promotes diversity with an
inclusive and collaborative community and the use of modern
instructional methods and is dedicated to educating well-rounded
students with strong entrepreneurial spirits and innovative
thinking with a global outlook. While the University is
deeply rooted in Hong Kong, HKUST (GZ) is being developed in
Guangzhou, Mainland China to complement the well-established
disciplinary foundation at the Hong Kong campus with 4
transdisciplinary hubs and 16 thrust areas to achieve maximum
synergy in education and research. English is the medium of
teaching, research and administration. With its short
history, HKUST has established a strong presence in the global
higher education scene and has been ranked among the top
universities by QS Universities Rankings and the Times Higher
Education Supplement.
The School of Science
The School of Science is the home to five Departments/Division –
Chemistry, Life Science, Mathematics, Ocean Science and
Physics. Current enrollment at the School includes over 2,000
undergraduate students and 1,000 graduate students. There is
at present a faculty size of around 190, many of whom are leaders
in their research fields with international recognition for their
scientific contributions.
The Role
The Dean of Science, reporting to the Provost, is an executive as
well as a faculty appointment, and a member of the senior
administrative team of the University. The appointee is
expected to provide strong and dynamic leadership in effecting the
academic objectives of the School through efficient management of
intellectual and financial resources, including the promotion of a
vibrant undergraduate and graduate educational program, relentless
pursuit of a cutting-edge, innovative, disciplinary and
inter-disciplinary research portfolio, as well as the nurturing of
new academic partnerships and business linkages. As part of
this work the Dean will play an active role in faculty recruitment
as well as in fostering diversity & inclusion, and engage in
university-wide initiatives on knowledge transfer and collaboration
with institutions worldwide. The Dean of Science will also
play a key coordination role in the design and development of
academic programs and research facilities at HKUST (GZ) campus
during its early development stage to facilitate the synergy and
encourage collaboration in research and teaching between the School
of Science and HKUST (GZ).
The Candidate
The appointee should have international stature in their chosen
field as well as demonstrated capability and experience in academic
administration in higher education. The appointee should have
a global vision and demonstrated commitment to academic
excellence.
Terms & Applications/Nominations
The appointment will be concurrent with a substantive professorial
appointment. The deanship will be a full-time appointment,
for an initial term of 5 years, and may be renewed. HKUST
