The Anthropology Program (as part of the Sociology and Anthropology Department) at Southwestern University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Cultural Anthropology to start August 2021. We welcome any applicants who can extend our curriculum beyond the regions and topics that our current faculty cover:  Latin America and the Caribbean, Environmental Anthropology, and the Anthropology of Religion. We are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in candidates who have a Texas or U.S. focused research agenda that can readily include undergraduate students. Because our institution is a small liberal arts college, we especially welcome candidates who could participate in interdisciplinary programs such as Race and Ethnicity Studies, Feminist Studies, International Studies, who would be open to developing close teaching and scholarly relationships with other relevant departments and programs, and who would be interested in contributing courses to the general education curriculum. We are most focused on bringing in a colleague who is passionate about being a teacher-scholar in the liberal arts context, who is committed to social justice, and who would be poised to closely mentor the diverse range of students we attract. Our department has been at the forefront of Southwestern’s work towards increasing and fostering diversity, inclusion and belonging throughout the University and we seek candidates who are also committed to this work. We are committed to supporting and mentoring our new tenure track hire, ensuring that they can thrive as they move along the tenure track at SU.

Faculty at Southwestern are expected to teach a standard course load of five courses per year (either 2-3 or 3-2), maintain an active research agenda, as well as participate in university governance, departmental collaboration, and academic advising. The successful candidate will teach 2-3 sections of introductory cultural anthropology courses each year, rotate between approximately three different upper level electives in their areas of interest, and alternate between teaching the major-only mid-level core theory and method course and the senior research seminar.

Candidates must have a PhD in Anthropology, a demonstrated record of commitment to and excellence in teaching undergraduate students, a demonstrated commitment to mentoring students from underrepresented groups, including racially minoritized students, and cultivating inclusion and belonging, and an active research agenda.

Southwestern University is a selective, undergraduate institution committed to a broad-based liberal arts, sciences, and fine arts education. Southwestern currently enrolls approximately 1,500 students and maintains a student to faculty ratio of 12:1.  In addition to a number of other national organizations, Southwestern University is a member of two consortia of liberal arts colleges, the Associated Colleges of the South and the Annapolis Group. Located in Georgetown, Texas, 28 miles north of downtown Austin, Southwestern is affiliated with The United Methodist Church.  Southwestern University is committed to fostering a diverse education environment and encourages applications from members of groups traditionally under-represented in academia.  For information concerning the University, visit our website at www.southwestern.edu.

Applicants should submit a CV, a list of three references, and a letter of interest that includes brief descriptions of teaching, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and research. Applications will be accepted through January 27, and should be submitted through Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/81248.  No materials will be accepted in hard copy or via email. The entirety of the interview process will be conducted virtually.  All offers of employment are contingent on successful completion of the University’s Background Check Policy process.
