Tenure-Track Professor in Statistics/Data Analysis or Head, Mathematical Sciences at The Citadel

The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in statistics or data analysis at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, beginning August 2021. Candidates possessing credentials for a tenured appointment as Head, Mathematical Sciences, at the rank of Professor, are also encouraged to apply. Located in beautiful Charleston, S.C., The Citadel is a fully accredited, public, comprehensive, co-educational college with a student body of 2500 day undergraduate and 1200 evening and graduate students. For the past ten years, U.S. News and World Report has ranked The Citadel as the top public college in the South among masters granting institutions. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers the Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, undergraduate minors in applied mathematics and applied statistics, and graduate courses supporting the Master of Arts in Teaching mathematics offered by the Zucker Family School of Education.

Position Responsibilities

Teaching responsibilities range from introductory courses in mathematics for non-majors, courses for majors and minors, and graduate courses for mathematics teachers. A normal teaching load is twelve credit hours per week with small class sizes (The Citadel’s student-to-faculty ratio is 12:1 and the average undergraduate class size is 20). Other responsibilities include mentoring students through advising and undergraduate research, participating in curriculum revision, creating new courses, and faculty governance.

For applicants seeking the Department Head position, additional responsibilities include strategic planning and visioning within the department; development, implementation and assessment of programs; in consultation with faculty, management of teaching and service assignments; faculty development, mentoring, and performance review; conflict resolution; communication of department, college, and institutional plans, policies, activities, and expectations; in coordination with the Dean and faculty, development and maintenance of enrollment targets; fostering collaborative relationships and activities with other departments within the School and across the College. The normal teaching load is six credit hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in statistics, data science, data analysis, or a closely related field, with strong knowledge in statistics or data analysis. Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence and innovation in undergraduate education within a diverse and inclusive environment and peer-reviewed scholarship in one’s field(s).

Preferred Qualifications

Prior teaching experience and excellence commensurate with the position rank being sought; evidence of mentoring and engaging undergraduates in research; a record of scholarly publications commensurate with the position rank being sought; experience developing new degree programs and curriculum.

For applicants seeking the Department Head position at the rank of Professor, preferred qualifications include evidence of exemplary leadership in supporting and facilitating teaching and scholarship; excellent management, supervisory, and budgetary skills; demonstrated ability to build trust through collaborative decision-making, shared governance, and commitment to academic freedom; experience in obtaining external funding; superior communication skills and an ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies internal and external to The Citadel; and success in growing undergraduate programs or developing new ones.
