Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

We eagerly seek candidates to apply for the Division Chair of Internal Medicine. This position is expected to be a vigorous and visionary leader in the ongoing development of an outstanding clinical and research program that will advance the academic and service missions of the VCU Health System, the Massey Cancer Center, the School of Medicine, and the Department of Internal Medicine. The Chair of the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care has a dual reporting relationship to the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Director of the Massey Cancer Center. The Division Chair will have a leadership role in VCU’s goals of achieving NCI Comprehensive Cancer designation, strengthening the research portfolio in the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Palliative Care, and advancing clinical trials.

The Division Chair will have a unique opportunity to serve as an Associate Director in the Massey Cancer Center depending upon the chair’s research interests and expertise. As the Chair of one of the largest and most strategically important Divisions in the Department of Internal Medicine, this position will have a key role in defining the future of the Department, its educational programs, research, and clinical service lines. As the leader of the most strategically important and largest academic unit contributing to the Massey Cancer Center, the Division Chair will be a member of the Massey Cancer Center Executive Committee that will determine the strategic initiatives of the clinical, research and education programs. The Division Chair has the authority to appoint associate division chairs to oversee clinical, educational and research programs. Among the major responsibilities of this position will be recruiting and mentoring of new faculty, fostering an ambitious clinical research agenda, overseeing the fellowship programs, and expanding our clinical footprint in the region. The Division Chair oversees a budget of $12.5 million and a growing faculty body consisting of ~50 faculty members at the current time.

Serving as the Division’s chief administrator and advocate in all internal and external collaborations and partnerships, the Division Chair plays a central role in the success of the many research, clinical, educational, and community outreach programs across VCU that intersect with cancer research and care. From this crucial strategic vantage point, the Division Chair represents the Department of Internal Medicine, the School of Medicine, the VCU Massey Cancer Center, the VCU Health System, the University, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the broader community.

Position Responsibilities

Teaching
The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in the area of Hematology and Oncology, which will include, but not be limited to, the education of medical students, housestaff and fellows. In addition, the faculty will promote scholarship and the academic mission of the division.

Research
Develops clinical trial protocols and complies with all regulatory requirements. Writes and submits grant applications during the course of the academic year. Writes and publishes multiple manuscripts during the course of an academic year. Serves as a PI or Co-investigator on peer-reviewed grants and is responsible for complying with all institution and sponsor terms and conditions for grant funding. Ensures resources are utilized optimally for advancing the clinical research program. Participates in Massey Cancer Center Core Grant and CTSA applications and site visits as requested. Participates and engages other members of the Massey Cancer Center and the Department of Internal Medicine in collaborative research projects.

Faculty member should have a nationally recognized research program with an established record of publication in high-impact journals and success in securing external funding. They are expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the division’s research program. In addition, they will mentor faculty, fellows, residents, and graduate and undergraduate students in their research. The division chair encourages fellows and residents to participate in many ongoing basic and clinical research projects.

Service
Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University, Hospital and Massey Cancer Center committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field (e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.).

Clinical
Responsible for overseeing the staffing of outpatient clinics, inpatient unit, and inpatient consultative services, as well as providing clinical care in a disease focused outpatient clinic.

Administration
Serves as the Associate Director for Clinical Research ( ADCR ), Massey Cancer Center. The ADCR serves a vital role in achieving accrual goals to meet one of the most critical criteria for obtaining comprehensive designation. The ADCR is expected to be nimble and strategic in balancing our clinical trial menu, including National Clinical Trials Network ( NCTN ), investigator-initiated, and industry-supported trials, and tailoring it to serve the patient populations that we have. The incumbent will ensure the timely activation of trials working with leadership in the Massey Clinical Trial’s office, the VCU Health System, the Office of Research, and the IRB to quickly resolve any issues with timely activation of trials. This position will act on feedback received from the Center Director, the Clinical Research Leadership Committee, and the leaders of the Disease Working Groups ( DWG ) in implementing solutions to overcome identified barriers to trial accrual. The ADCR will be a champion in ensuring that every oncologist puts at least one patient on trial each month.

This position works with clinical investigators of the Center’s research programs as well as with cancer clinicians of the VCUHS to fashion a clinical trials menu that reflects both the strengths of the cancer center’s science and the cancer burden of MCC patients served in the region. The ADCR works closely with the Associate Director of Translational Research to create a seamless pathway for moving promising new scientific concepts into clinical trials through the recently implemented formal process for identifying and prioritizing translational preclinical concepts and providing the necessary infrastructure for their development into investigator-initiated early phase clinical trials. The incumbent serves on the MCC Executive Committee which oversees and advises the MCC Director on all aspects of planning and tactical implementation of center research initiatives. They will advance our goal of providing patients with access to new treatments for cancer through novel, investigator-initiated clinical trials throughout the state of Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region. In addition to investigator-initiated trials, the ADCR is responsible for maintaining and increasing participation in NCTN trials that are only available at select cancer centers in the US. The ADCR is also responsible for maintaining funding for our NCI Community Oncology Research Program ( NCORP ) grant award, which is a national NCI -supported network that brings cancer clinical trials to people in minority or underserved communities. The network also participates in treatment and imaging clinical trials conducted by NCI’s National Clinical Trials Network and integrates health disparities research questions into NCORP studies.

The successful candidate for the Division Chair and ADCR role will have a significant and successful track record as a leader, scholar, and academic administrator. This individual will bring strong strategic and financial skills and the demonstrated ability to attract talent, empower colleagues, and promote growth.

• A terminal degree in medicine and/or biomedical research from an accredited institution and academic record meriting an appointment as a full professor at VCU
• Board certified in Medical Oncology or Hematology
• A distinguished record of scientific achievements as evidenced by both publications and a strong track record of extramural peer-reviewed research funding
• An ability to articulate a compelling vision and implement a strategy that engages faculty, staff, students, partners, and donors alike
• Experience guiding organizational change and growth
• Experience building research and scholarship programs
• Experience leading clinical programs in a competitive clinical marketplace
