The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Siena College invites outstanding applicants for a full-time Physics and Engineering Lab Manager. The Lab Manager is primarily responsible for supporting all physics and applied physics laboratories taught during the academic year. As part of this effort, the Lab Manager also teaches four introductory-level physics and/or applied physics labs or courses (for a total of 12 contact hours) during the academic year.

The duties and responsibilities of the Lab Manager additionally include: working closely with faculty to help improve existing labs, and to develop new projects, labs, and other experiential learning experiences for students which align with departmental learning outcomes; maintaining an organized and well-cataloged inventory of equipment and demonstration materials for all physics, engineering, and astronomy courses; ensuring that all laboratory equipment is functional and safe; and maintaining the hardware and software on all departmental computers and laptops, including 3D printers.

Among baccalaureate colleges and universities, the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Siena is nationally recognized as one of the largest physics departments in the country, with approximately 85 undergraduate students majoring or minoring in physics, applied physics (with tracks in electrical and mechanical engineering), computational physics, and astrophysics, the majority of whom participate in research projects throughout the academic year. Moreover, the department has the distinction of being among just 21 institutions to award more than 40% of its B.S. degrees in physics to women the past several years (compared to the 20% national average). The department currently consists of nine full-time faculty and a small family of adjunct faculty with whom the Lab Manager will work closely for the benefit of Siena students and the department.

Applicants should have a Masters or Ph.D. in physics, engineering, or a related field and an established record of teaching excellence of physics and/or engineering courses, particularly laboratories, at the undergraduate level. Candidates with no formal teaching experience will also be considered, although they will need to demonstrate a strong and thoughtful interest in teaching and pedagogy.

In support of our growing applied physics program, successful applicants should have technical expertise with manufacturing and fabrication tools, electronics equipment, physics laboratory equipment, and 3D printing, including familiarity with best practices for safety. Experience with the use of computers for data acquisition and analysis in a laboratory environment is also required.

Finally, the successful candidate must share the department's commitment to recruiting and mentoring undergraduate students, especially women and members of underrepresented groups. A background screening is required.

Siena College is committed to attracting, supporting, and retaining a diverse body of faculty, staff, and administrators. We actively encourage applications from women, minorities, persons with disabilities, veterans, and others from underrepresented groups who may make a positive contribution to the diversification of ideas and perspectives.

Siena College is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Questions regarding this position can be directed to Prof. John Moustakas, Chair of the Department of Physics & Astronomy at jmoustakas@siena.edu.

Applications received on or before December 15, 2020 will receive full consideration, although the search will remain open until the position is filled.

Complete applications should include a cover letter which addresses the candidate's background, qualifications, and experience; a curriculum vitae; a teaching philosophy statement; and contact information for two professional references to http://siena.interviewexchange.com/jobofferdetails.jsp?JOBID=126492
