Organizational Unit Overview
The William E. Laupus Health Sciences Library (Laupus Library) serves as the primary information resource center for the University’s instructional, research, and patient care programs in the health sciences. It also serves as the comprehensive information resource center for health care professionals who practice in northeastern North Carolina. In addition, the Laupus Library serves as a secondary resource for nontechnical health care information for health care consumers in the local community. The Laupus Library emphasizes proactive information provision including the acquisition of current and relevant materials, reference services that recognize the existence of diverse levels of client expertise and needs, and the implementation of new technologies for accessing and managing information.

Job Duties
Laupus Library at East Carolina University (ECU) seeks an innovative, enthusiastic librarian to join the Information and Research Services Department and serve as a liaison to the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM). This position is primarily responsible for providing proactive coordination, promotion, delivery, and assessment of library services and resources for BSOM. As a member of the Laupus Library Information and Research Services Department, this position provides reference related assistance, instruction, high level searches including Systematic Reviews, and related tasks. This librarian will work with BSOM researchers and the Laupus Research Librarian to develop and provide innovative services to assist with data management and curation, open educational resources, and similar tasks. This position also develops and delivers library skills training and is expected to become immersed in the work of BSOM to best understand their needs regarding library related services and resources.

This librarian is expected to be actively engaged with projects and/or committee work and be a team player with colleagues and co-workers both within Laupus Library and the University. This librarian is expected to also be active in professional library organizations, and to set and pursue professional and service related goals.

This position reports to the Assistant Director for User Services.

Primary Duties

  • Serves as liaison to BSOM by becoming immersed in the school and keenly attuned to the needs of instructors, students, researchers, and staff, and proactively promoting innovative library related solutions where appropriate; provides high level professional reference assistance using a variety of methods and media, including regular reference shifts in Laupus Library; actively promotes and publicizes library services and resources; provides regular reports to colleagues and supervisors regarding BSOM; engages as a team member of the Laupus Information & Research Services Department and actively participates in meetings, committees, and similar duties.
  • Engages with researchers in BSOM, providing assistance and expertise with scholarly communication tasks such as high-level searches, data curation or management, the NIH open access mandate, co-authoring Systematic Reviews, and other related kinds of activities; proactively seeks partnerships and creative synergies between researchers and Laupus Library.
  • Develops, teaches, and assesses library and information skills programs for students, faculty, and staff in traditional, non-traditional, and distance learning environments, as needed in coordination with the Assistant Director for User Services.
  • Assists in maintaining the print and electronic collections to best support BSOM by reviewing weekly book vendor approval plan; assists in deselecting and/or shifting the print collection as needed.
  • Reviews web-based information and resources and suggests additions and/or changes on behalf of the BSOM.
  • Participates in the work of the Information and Research Services unit and collaborates with other colleagues as appropriate.
  • Represents Laupus Library at meetings and similar work-related events. Maintains professional demeanor, conduct and ethics while working in a team environment.
  • Participates in Laupus Library committees and projects as assigned.
  • Participates in scholarly activities, and professional service. Seeks opportunities to enhance professional knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to this position and his/her overall career development.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree or international equivalent in library or information science.
  • New graduates will be considered for this position; ALA accredited degree must have been earned prior to submitting application.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Previous experience in an Academic Library, preferably in a Health Sciences environment
  • Evidence of strong customer service skills
  • Experience or training in high level searches such as authoring systematic reviews or scoping reviews; experience working with researchers
  • Experience with providing assistance for data management, data curation, or related tasks
  • Experience teaching library skills to various size groups
  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent oral and written communication
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm about developing library trends and technologies, as well as trends in the role of Libraries in Higher Education
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to adapt quickly to and master new relevant technologies
