Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, School of Osteopathic Medicine (Stratford)



FUNCTION:

The Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs provides leadership for the planning and implementation of all components of the academic programs' administration for the medical school. This includes oversight and supervision of the divisions of Alumni Engagement, Assessment, Center for Teaching and Learning, Curriculum, Registrar, and Student Affairs. The Senior Associate Dean leads these divisions to meet SOM’s mission to “develop clinically skillful, compassionate and culturally competent physicians from diverse backgrounds who are grounded in our osteopathic philosophy and ready to meet future healthcare workforce needs”. This role reports directly to the Dean and is a key member of the Dean’s Cabinet.

DUTIES:

Oversee and guide the Deans and Directors of Academic Affairs to meet the mission of RowanSOM. Ensure that best practices are being utilized.

  1. Ensure that the school meets and exceeds all standards of the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) on an ongoing basis. Oversee the Director of Academic Affairs to develop all COCA reports and facilitate all site visits. Develop external reports as needed. Interface with the Rowan University Provost’s office with activities related to University accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
  2. Oversee the Office of the Registrar. Work with the Registrar to ensure that applicant and student records are appropriately maintained and all FERPA regulations are met.
  3. Oversee the Dean for Assessment and the Offices of Assessment and Simulation. Ensure that comprehensive program evaluation and student assessment are utilized, and are tracked and reported across the continuum of education. Develop separate processes for formative and summative benchmarks for student advancement. Develop and integrate simulation programming into the curriculum for assessing student physician skills.
  4. Oversee the Director and Office of Center for Teaching and Learning. Ensure that students have appropriate programs, tutoring, and tools needed for academic success. Track academic progress of students and ensure timely intervention when needed. Provide longitudinal career counseling to support students' GME aspirations. Administratively support the Student Academic Progress Committee.
  5. Oversee the Dean and Office of Clinical Education. Work to develop and maintain clinical training sites. Ensure maintenance of affiliation agreements, and all teaching faculty credentialing at all sites. Assure appropriate scheduling of students for clinical rotations.
  6. Oversee the Dean for Curriculum and the Offices of Curriculum and Faculty Development. Engage faculty through the Curriculum Committee to develop curricular innovations using multiple learning formats including online learning technology. Collaborate with the Curriculum Committee throughout curriculum planning, development, implementation, and evaluation. Ensure that all directives of the committee are implemented. Ensure that Faculty Development supports a scholarly approach to developing medical educators and advances educational research. Support faculty education programs that elevate the skills of SOM faculty to meet organizational objectives and nationally accepted accreditation standards and requirements. Organize and track all faculty development activities for paid and volunteer faculty.
  7. Oversee the Deans of Student Affairs and the Office of Student Affairs and Alumni Engagement. Ensure that student-related policies and procedures foster inclusion and equity, and are clearly communicated and consistently implemented. Lead a culture of professionalism, wellness, equity and inclusion for student organizations and activities. Provide administrative support for student health insurance, student health and wellness programs. Provide support for student organizations and activities. Provide support for the RowanSOM Alumni Association, and maintain effective communications and relationships with the alumni community. Maintain related databases for outcomes assessment and reporting. Plan and implement student events throughout the year.
  8. Oversee the administrative activities of Academic Affairs including budget development and management, as well as operations issues, working with the administrator of Academic Affairs.
  9. Lead RowanSOM's implementation of the strategic planning goals pertaining to student education.
  10. Demonstrate a commitment to advance the schools efforts in diversity, equity and inclusion.
  11. Encourage development and publication of educational research and scholarly presentations of all leaders within Academic Affairs.
  12. Evaluate staff and faculty to develop/enhance social justice and cultural competencies and recognize successful efforts in advancing equity and inclusion.
  13. Mentor assistant and associate deans and directors.
  14. Represent the school in University activities related to Academic Affairs issues.
  15. Develop Inter-Professional education opportunities.
  16. Interface with students and student leaders to seek feedback about the school's programming. Provide academic and career counseling as needed.
  17. Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS: Qualified applicants must be a DO, MD, EdD or PhD with 10 years of experience in undergraduate medical education and at least five years of academic administrative leadership experience at a senior level which includes budget management, and has their own academic portfolio (research, peer-reviewed publications, etc.). Ability to work with people from diverse racial, ethnic, gender identity, and socioeconomic backgrounds and adapt a flexible leadership style for multiple cultural environments with a strong knowledge of racial health disparities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present to diverse audiences. Outstanding leadership, interpersonal communication, collaboration, team-building, and negotiation skills with a varied constituency (students, faculty, chairs, staff) are essential. Experience with the osteopathic medical school landscape is preferred. Experience in education, admissions, academic accreditation, student affairs, management and administration strongly preferred.
