Position Function

Under the direction of the Associate Vice Provost for University College and Student Success, and through collaborative relationships across campus, the Director of First Year Experience will coordinate and oversee a comprehensive first year experience for students that will facilitate student academic success, foster a greater sense of community, and increase student persistence and retention. Serve as a primary liaison from Academic Affairs to Summer Bridge programs, Orientation and Welcome Week, the Living Learning Communities, First Year Faculty Ambassadors, the Career Center, and Commuter Connections.

Minimum Education

Master’s degree in relevant field from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience

Three years of experience with innovative student success and retention initiatives in a higher education setting.

Minimum Other

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple simultaneous projects with attention to detail and adherence to deadlines.

Demonstrated ability to form collaborative relationships with other University offices.

Outstanding social media skills.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Knowledge of technology that supports student success including predictive analytics, data analysis, and student-facing softwares.

Authorization to work in the US

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Education

Doctorate or terminal degree in relevant field from an accredited institution.

Preferred Experience

Experience with implementation of a First Year Experience comprehensive program.

Experience working with professionals in a Career Center and in Living and Learning Communities.

Experience collaborating with Summer Orientation and Welcome Weeks programming.

Preferred Other

Solid knowledge of trends in higher education as they relate to student success, retention and support.

Duties & Responsibilities



Job Duty

In consultation with and under the guidance of the Associate Vice Provost for University College and Student Success, develop, implement, provide oversight and guidance for the program, and assess a comprehensive first year experience of student academic success, persistence, and retention based on academic transformation, community-building, and growth that is aligned with the University’s strategic plan. Serve as the AVP’s primary support point of contact for all matters related to first year student experience and academic success.



Job Duty

In collaboration with other campus stakeholders, provide programming to support first year student academic success, with special attention to students who are currently at risk, on academic probation, and traditionally underserved by the University system. Keep current on trends and best practices in first year advising, retention, student development, and student success.

Serve as a primary liaison from Academic Affairs to the Living Learning Communities, Summer Bridge programs, Orientation and Welcome Week,First Year Faculty Ambassadors, the Career Center, and Commuter Connections.



Job Duty

In collaboration with other campus stakeholders, enhance early intervention strategies for first year students. Support, intervene, advocate, and recommend resources and solutions to academic challenges and barriers faced by first year students, with a focus on inclusivity.



Job Duty

Develop, coordinate, and assess first year seminars and other first year curriculum. Work with departments and other stakeholders to ensure quality and consistency, and manage learning outcomes.



Job Duty

Utilize a network of relationships across campus to effectively support first year student academic success and foster a culture of self-confidence and community. Work collaboratively and proactively with other offices such as Student Life, the Career Center, and Inclusive Excellence to provide a comprehensive structure of support services for students that will help prepare them for their future careers.



Job Duty

Provide leadership to enhance exploratory studies programs. Provide guidance to students who are in transition to college to become active and self-directed learners.



Job Duty

Maintain a high degree of visibility and availability to students, faculty, and staff. Assist the Associate Vice Provost in outreach efforts to departments and colleges to share services and provide support. Manage complex and sensitive issues with compassion and confidentiality. Stay current on resources available on campus to meet student needs.



Job Duty

Work collaboratively with other members of the AVP’s team to identify and establish clear, measurable goals for each academic year and semester. Create annual progress reports and program evaluations. Report as required on the strategic plan initiatives and the unit action plan.

Serve on University committees related to the first year experience of students as assigned.
