Mission or Goal of Unit

The Special Education programs in the VCU School of Education prepare graduate students with knowledge in evidence-based practice and inclusive education, skills in intervention research leading to effective strategies, evidence-based special education teacher education preparation, and dispositions in serving young children and students with or without disabilities from diverse communities through systematic training in research, teaching, and service.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The faculty member will be responsible for teaching and service related to advancing the mission of the Special Education General Education undergraduate and master’s programs, with opportunities to teach other courses as needed. We are encouraging applicants with professional experience and expertise in working with children and youth with high-incidence disabilities. We encourage applicants experienced with observing and supervising practicum and student teachers, coordinating programs, and familiarity with program accreditation to apply.

Position Responsibilities

•Teaching and Advising
The candidate will:
A. Be expected to teach a 4-4-2 teaching load for undergraduate and graduate special education general programs.
B. Provide on-going advising each semester for students enrolled in special education programs.
C. Recruit students for admission to undergraduate and graduate programs.
D. Develop and implement policies and procedures related to special education general programs

•Service
The candidate will:
A. Provide meaningful service to the community through participating in department, school, and/or university committees as well as collaborating with community partners and to the profession locally.
B. May coordinate aspects of the special education general undergraduate/graduate programs, which includes group meetings, policy development, curricular and/or assessment improvement efforts, respond to inquiries about program requirements and/or admission, review applications, course scheduling, and/or engaging community partners.

Required Qualifications

•An earned doctorate in special education, or closely related field
•Experience teaching university courses relating to preparing special education educators
•Experience observing and supervising practicum and student teachers
•Commitment to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students within urban settings with individuals in our schools who have been historically marginalized and done from a culturally responsive lens, and serving on thesis committees
•Demonstrated teaching practice in advancing access, equity, and quality education for learners from historically marginalized and underrepresented minority populations living in poverty and/or the educators that serve them
•Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
•Experience working within urban settings with individuals in our communities who have been historically marginalized and done from a culturally responsive lens

Preferred Qualifications

•Program coordination and accreditation experience
•Evidence of leadership roles in professional special education organizations
•Demonstrated work (e.g. practice, research, and/or scholarship) in advancing access,
equity, and quality education for learners from historically marginalized and
underrepresented minority populations living in poverty and/or the educators that serve
them
