The Legal Office and Associate Counsel support the learning and working environment and strategic priorities of the College. CSCC is a dynamic, future-oriented and flexible academic and work environment. This position utilizes critical thinking and a high level of interpersonal skills to advise the Board, Executive Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors and all College clients on a wide variety of legal issues. This position has oversight related to litigation, risk management, regulatory compliance and federal, state and local laws and college Policy. Additionally, the Legal Office aligns its work with furthering the external partnership and workforce development priorities of the College. Complex and varying areas of the law are the norm, ranging from constitutional issues, employment, federal and state compliance, public contracts, privacy, affiliated entities, and risk assessment, among many others.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides assistance to and/or manages College legal matters, including but not limited to, drafting and reviewing College contracts, agreements, partnership and grant-related agreements; provide advice as to business transactions; compliance with federal and state laws and reporting requirements related to higher education, performing legal research and rendering of opinions; advising on College policies and procedures, student and academic affairs appeals and processes.
Assists with compliance matters, strategic partnership initiatives, risk management and prevention. Assists with review and drafting of College Policies and Procedures and departmental handbooks, procedures, and process improvements.
LEGAL OFFICE SUPPORT
Provides legal project support to General Counsel and/or Deputy General Counsel, staff, department, and division. Performs legal projects, as assigned. Compiles information, documents, records, surveys, standards, litigation documents, and assess client needs for reports, local memoranda, analysis, and recommendations as necessary for legal matters. Conducts legal research and provides analysis and interpretation of the law, draft findings, litigation pleadings, and recommendations as necessary for legal matters.

Drafts findings, litigation pleadings, recommendations and assess civil, regulatory, criminal and administrative law and College policy. Drafts and reviews legal documents (e.g. contracts, settlements, financial agreements, opinions of law, etc.) and other memoranda and opinions for the benefit of the College.
CONSULTATION & TRAINING
Provides client meetings, consultation, legal advice, and training to the College as needed on legal matters related to Columbus State Community College. Acts as a liaison for the Legal Office and perform internal and external communications, correspondence, presentations, and projects as needed. Meets and interacts with College employees, students, external attorneys, the Ohio Attorney General, and the general public as needed. Maintains professional relationships.
OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Ability to work some evenings and weekends, as needed. Attends all required department meetings and trainings.
USUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer, frequently sits for extended periods of time, and occasionally stands and walks. Employee occasionally reaches with hands or arms and stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls when installing hardware or software. Employee converses verbally with others in person and by telephone. Vision demands include close, detailed vision when focusing on computer screen. Employee regularly talks and hears. Employee occasionally lifts computers or other items or exerts up to 30 pounds.
Typical office environment. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical to business offices. Must travel to various Columbus State campuses and sites.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: legal research and analysis; standard office procedures and practices; office administration; business English word usage, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation; business letter formats.
Skill in: analytical thinking; providing recommendations based on applicable law; providing legal counsel; litigation experience; board/public body governance; handling sensitive inquiries; establishing high level confidential relationship with internal/external contacts; oral and written communications; problem solving; typing [35-55 wpm]; application of job software including word processing and spreadsheets; legal research and analysis; proofreading standard business correspondence and other written documents; customer service; office organization; creating functional report formats; performing mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, decimals, percentages and fractions; clerical and administrative duties; data entry.
Ability to: draft and review legal documents; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret a variety of legal information, including laws (local, state, and federal); develop and maintain good working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts and general public; maintain confidential, privileged, sensitive, and/or public records and information as required in compliance with College directives, policy, federal, state and local laws, court and administrative procedure; exhibit a pleasant public manner and telephone etiquette; originate correspondence; work independently with minimal supervision; demonstrate commitment to equity and diversity.
A Juris Doctorate degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school. Three (3) years practicing as an attorney with progressively responsible legal and administrative experience. This position carries the designation of Assistant Attorney General of the State of Ohio and must be approved by the Ohio Attorney General prior to hire. Admission to the Ohio Bar, with a current active license in good standing. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s). An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
Experience in the following areas:
- Litigation and discovery and/or in administrative bodies (ORC 119) in the State of Ohio
- Federal and state regulatory compliance, with a focus on higher education laws
- Project management
- Experience with affiliated entities and public-private partnerships
