Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager or Medical Director or Principal Investigator or designee, performs a variety of both routine and complex laboratory tests in accordance with established standards and procedures. This individual will perform a variety of technical procedures on clinical and research specimens in the histology laboratory.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintains detailed working knowledge of all assigned protocols as they relate to sample preparation and PCR applications.
  • Prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist or investigator.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Initiates the process for equipment repair when needed.
  • Programs tissue processors.
  • Performs routine histology on animal samples including sectioning, special stain techniques; embedding specimens; prepares various staining solutions; decalcification and staining of bone specimens using a modified H&E stain technique; operating automated tissue processors, stainers, slide and cassette printers.
  • Performs quality assurance procedures such as block and slide match, reports discrepancies per standard operating procedure.
  • Provide accurate information on work conducted for client billing purposes.
  • Reports to the PIs and consults with the Laboratory managers.
  • Inventory management: monitors supply inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, documents orders upon receipt.
  • Demonstrates highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Informs the PI in a timely manner when difficult problems, unusual development or activities occur.
  • Demonstrates the ability to relate well and work well with all levels of staff.
  • Demonstrates the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines
  • Participates in the development and implementation of lab goals and objectives.
  • Participates in problem-solving process based in comprehensive analysis of situations while demonstrating the use of a logical, reasoned, factual and systematic approach.
  • Recognizes limitations and seeks help from appropriate resources when needed.
  • Maintain and make minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment.
  • Uses various software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required and some college coursework in the Biological Sciences required.
  • One (1) year of related laboratory experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an Associate’s degree from an accredited Histotechnology Certification program.
  • Course work in sciences / health care preferred.
  • Laboratory work that includes some experience with histology.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, good organizational and time management skills, and work independently with minimal supervision.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
