General Summary/Purpose:

The Job covers working in the laboratory, which focuses on development of Alternatives to Animal Testing. The main area of the research in the laboratory is neurotoxicity and developmental neurotoxicity with link to autism and Parkinson’s disease. The research is focused on in vitro methods entirely. In particular: development of in vitro 3D brain organotypic cultures (brain organoids), iPSC cultures, metabolomics, and toxicity testing of potential neurotoxicants in brain organoids. International environment.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The applicant will be responsible for general maintenance of the laboratory such as performing cell culture work, routinely check and order laboratory supplies, perform laboratory safety evaluations, maintain laboratory space, equipment and inventory in an appropriate and professional manner.
  • The applicant will be supporting the PhD students, PostDocs and faculty in the lab by taking care of the iPSC, neural progenitor cells and 3D brain organoid cultures, performing immunohistochemistry, RNA isolation and Real-Time PCRs.
  • Moreover, the applicant will be involved in the metabolomics work, including sample preparation and data analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in biology, chemistry or related field required.
  • Three (3) years related experience required.
  • Demonstrated supervisory or lead responsibilities required.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) with related graduate experience may substitute for one year of experience.For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in public health or a related field preferred.
  • Preferably at least five years of work experience in the cell culture laboratory.
  • Skills in maintenance of iPSC are neural cell cultures are desired.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Cell culture experience, aseptic technique, and basic wet laboratory operations such as RNA isolation, Real-time PCR, and western blot are desired.
  • The knowledge of SAP will be encouraged.
  • As we are in a pandemic where we have minimal possibilities to mentor the applicant, it will be important that the candidate has enough experience to work independent as fast as possible.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
