The Department of Innovative Teaching and Leadership at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education (JHUSOE) invites applicants for the position of Director of Clinical Faculty supporting our partnership with Urban Teachers. Through this partnership with Urban Teachers (UT), JHUSOE offers a two-year Master of Science in Education degree that is integrated into a four-year teacher preparation program that results in the degree as well as dual certification in a content area and special education. The first year of the program includes a residency in a host teacher’s classroom. The mission of Urban Teachers is to improve educational and life outcomes of children in urban schools by preparing culturally competent, effective career teachers who accelerate student achievement and disrupt systems of racial and socioeconomic inequity. Urban Teachers accomplishes this by recruiting outstanding candidates, equipping them with state-of-the-art teacher preparation, and linking their certification to their demonstration of effective teaching practices and skills. This position is a part of our DC team. The DC site currently has 50 faculty serving nearly 400 students, with an average of 140 course sections offered each year over the Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters.

The Director of Clinical Faculty Role:
The Director of Clinical Faculty (DCF) is a visionary member of the DC UT/JHUSOE partnership team, collaborating closely with the UT Executive Director and DC leadership team to coordinate high-quality implementation of the program at the DC site. The DCF functions as the instructional leader for all DC faculty, supporting the Lead Clinical Faculty (LCF) team in articulating the instructional vision of the program and managing a high-performing team in support of that vision. The DCF plays a key role in ensuring an equitable and high-quality participant experience for all teachers in the UT/JHUSOE program.

In addition to a background in K12 education and teacher preparation, ideal candidates for this position will have experience creating a vision for a diverse team and developing a plan to achieve that vision, be an excellent oral and written communicator, and ground work and decisions in equity for all stakeholders, including faculty, teachers, and students.

While the DCF reports to the JHU Faculty Lead, the DCF also works closely with the site executive team. Position hours are full-time and require some evening and weekend work.

Key Responsibilities:

Faculty Leadership

  • Create and maintain a shared vision for teacher preparation and development as well as faculty/coach development and support
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality coaching and coursework through faculty development and support
  • Plan faculty professional development for the DC faculty (including Summer and Fall Prep, January Content Retreat, and regular PD sessions)
  • Manage, coordinate, and evaluate the work of the site-based LCFs and clinical faculty in all content areas and grade levels
  • Hire and onboard adjunct faculty, full-time clinical faculty, and instructional coaches
  • Plan and facilitate regular faculty meetings, as well as quarterly content retreats


Student/Participant Support

  • Serve as primary faculty advisor for resident cohort, including supporting participants in resolving any issues related to coursework, instructors, or coaches
  • Co-plan and implement summer orientation
  • Lead academic reviews (with support from course instructors and LCFs) of any grades that could have high stakes consequences for program participants
  • Regularly monitor program participant performance and other data, referring issues to the LCF and site teams


Staffing/Structural Support

  • Ensure all courses sections are staffed each semester and work with LCF team to communicate teaching assignments to faculty
  • Ensure that the coursework schedule meets all JHU guidelines
  • Create and communicate equitable supervising loads for LCF team by semester, depending on the number of courses, faculty members, and adjuncts
  • Manage Faculty Staffing Workbook, collaborating with Executive Director to manage the Clinical Faculty budget
  • Create and manage coaching rosters


Program Evaluation & Improvement

  • Provide academic and instructional quality control through distilling program data and strategic thinking and problem-solving based on that data
  • Ensure implementation of and provide feedback on the coaching program in partnership with the Director of Coaching, lead clinical faculty team, and feedback from faculty


Cross-Team and External Communication

  • Represent the DC faculty with, and serve as primary liaison between, the following teams: JHUSOE, UT Curriculum & Professional Development, UT Performance & Evaluation, DC site, and other internal teams, serving on internal and external working groups as needed
  • Represent the DC faculty team to external partners, including OSSE and the philanthropic community
  • Represent DC faculty in program development decisions
  • With support from the JHUSOE Faculty Lead, represent the program internally at the JHUSOE


Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Vision setter: has experience creating a vision and developing a plan to achieve that vision
  • Excellent oral and written communicator : can synthesize information and share with key stakeholders and can liaise across and among teams
  • Equity-minded: grounds work and decisions in equity for all stakeholders, including faculty, teachers, and students
  • Instructional leader : has experience successfully leading, developing, and managing a diverse, high-performing team in PK-12 urban public education
  • Graduate degree : Master’s degree or higher required, although a terminal degree is preferred)
  • Reflective practitioner : welcomes feedback and the challenges of managing a team at the juncture of two partners

  • Interviewing both on the phone and in-person with a panel made up of JHUSOE faculty and program leadership as well as representatives of the UT site and content teams;

  • Developing a PD plan on a core concept or topic; and
  • Completing a content assessment.
