The School of Education at Syracuse University is looking for an individual who will teach PED 200- Fitness Walking (1 credit).

Course Description: This course is designed to teach how walking improves cardiovascular fitness. The course will introduce and promote the fundamentals of aerobic conditioning and its relationship to lifespan wellness and the prevention of chronic disease. This course will cover the basic skills of walking, which are personalized for individual comfort level, goals, and lifestyles. Students will establish a fitness goal for the course based upon the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s physical activity guidelines for adults and will monitor their progress using various tracking strategies. Students will perform basic calculations to identify appropriate target heart rate zones. They will learn to reach the target zone at a walking pace to improve their fitness level. Completion of this course will establish a foundation for life-long wellness.

Qualifications

Discipline-specific certification required.

Job Specific Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Exercise Science or related field and college teaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Develop/update the course syllabus in accordance with SOE standards.

Ordering in advance books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes.

Preparing for classes.

Holding office hours each week for students in the class and others.

Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course.

Completing CAEP competency assessment reports (if required).

Turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University standards.

Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.

Other responsibilities as indicated.

Physical Requirements

The candidate will need to demonstrate the physical skills required to lead students through the appropriate activity.
