Job Summary
JCCC, our West Park location in Overland Park Kansas, is searching for non-credit instructors to teach English to non-native speakers by emphasizing reading, vocabulary development, listening, speaking, writing and grammar. Because of covid-19, this position may require teaching online. Non-credit instructors will:
• Teach basic computer skills, civic/citizenship, workplace skills and life skills
• Utilize on-line resources to teach in a classroom setting
• Create lesson plans (submission of weekly lesson plans to supervisor is required)
• Maintain student charts and attendance records
• Complete quarterly reports
• Participate in new student intake activities such as registration and testing
• Work with community literacy volunteers
• Participate in staff development activities both on-line and in person
• Fill in periodically for other teachers
• Complete annual mandatory training requirements
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Education (K-12), English as a Second Language or related area
• Experience working with English language learners
• Ability to create and implement lesson plans
• Ability to learn and teach prescribed curriculum
• Ability to create and maintain a student-centered classroom
• Ability to demonstrate classroom management skills
• Ability to work with multi-level learners
• Proficient in Microsoft Office software, on-line resources, and classroom technology
• Ability to work with community literacy volunteers
• Ability to be flexible and operate in a constantly changing teaching environment
• Ability to work a flexible schedule
• Ability to teach in an online environment using zoom and Google Classroom
Preferred Qualifications
•TESOL certificate from an accredited university or Master's degree in teaching English as a Second Language
• Ability to work with a diverse adult student population
• Ability to teach in a student-centered classroom for 3 hour sessions where cooperative learning is emphasized
• Minimum of one year teaching in a classroom setting (not individual tutoring)
• Experience working with adult learners
