Ball State University’s College of Fine Arts welcomes applications for Director of the School of Art, available July 1, 2021.

The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and serves as the school’s chief executive who plans, directs, and coordinates the academic, operational, personnel, budgetary matters and promotional activities pertaining to the school, provides leadership and direction in the development and implementation of academic programs, and advocates quality in teaching.

The Director serves as the school’s primary spokesperson and representative to the college, university, and external community, engages in proactive, collaborative short and long-range planning for the School of Art, facilitates opportunities for faculty scholarship and creative endeavors, manages the recruitment and retention of excellent faculty, and works to support a culture of diversity, inclusiveness, clear communication, and collegiality between faculty, staff, and students.

Position Function

Plan, direct, coordinate, and communicate the academic, operational, budgetary, and promotional activities for the School of Art; provide leadership and vision in the development and implementation of both graduate & undergraduate academic programs; advocate for resources for the School of Art, including equipment, technology, faculty travel, and scholarly/creative activities.

Minimum Education

Appropriate terminal degree in art or art-related discipline.

Minimum Experience

At least two years of experience as a full-time, higher education faculty member in art or an art-related discipline.

At least two years of demonstrated administrative experience in exercising leadership and consultative decision-making at the departmental level in higher education, to include curricular development, budget activities, facilities, and equipment.

Minimum Other

A strong record of scholarly and/or creative activities, teaching, and service.

Ability to function effectively as a college leadership team member within a complex, fast-paced, change-oriented institution.

Ability to execute duties with resilience and flexibility.

Ability to anticipate future deadlines and fulfill obligations to completion in a timely manner.

Ability to take initiative and demonstrate personal accountability.

Exhibit a high tolerance for ambiguity, including managing multiple priorities.

Preferred Education

Preferred Experience

Professional and administrative experience in the arts, including, but not limited to, graduate programs administration.

Experience with national accreditation processes.

Experience with fundraising and/or grant writing at multiple levels.

Experience with community engagement.

Experience facilitating the use of new technologies within an art or art-related curriculum.

Experience with incentivized-based budgeting models.

Preferred Other

Demonstrated awareness of contemporary best practices in schools of art and design.

Duties & Responsibilities



Job Duty

Provide leadership including in the development and evaluation of graduate and undergraduate academic and non-academic programs and curriculum within the School of Art.

Serve as the school’s primary spokesperson and representative to the college, university, and external community, and as an engaged participant in the College Leadership Team (including assisting the Dean in fundraising efforts)

Collaboratively plan, execute, and modify strategic initiatives for the School of Art.

Manage the recruitment and retention of excellent faculty; act as advocate for faculty members in matters concerning promotion, tenure, special assigned leave, release time etc.

Participate in student recruitment and retention, administration of scholarships, placement, and recognition of superior student performance.

Facilitate opportunities for faculty creative and scholarly endeavors. Encourage and assist faculty members in maintaining and renewing their academic/scholarly and professional credentials.

Manage all matters relating to appointment, evaluation, promotion, and tenure of faculty members within the guidelines adopted by the school, college, and university; administer the school evaluation policies concerning teaching, scholarly productivity, creative endeavors and service.

Assign, orient, supervise, and review work of staff; including interviewing, selection, compensation, performance appraisal, discipline, training, and career development.

Manage the assignment and scheduling of school courses and faculty members.



Job Duty

Supervise facilities and equipment, including technology needs for the entire school; work with facilities planning and management to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.

Oversee professional, discipline-specific accreditation processes as well as needed university accreditation(s)



Job Duty

Teach courses in general and/or expertise-specific areas of the discipline, School, and/or College as negotiated with the Dean
