The Coastal Plant Ecology Lab (www.cpel.vcu.edu) seeks a paid part-time (~10-15 hours per week) research assistant who will work with multiple projects including lab work and remote sensing of coastal upland communities. The individual will work with an ongoing funded project that involves sifting roots from soil cores and sampling for mycorrhizae. They will assist with remote sensing projects that use digital elevation models, aerial photography, and multispectral imagery to assist with projects related to short and long-term biogeomorphology of barrier islands. Prior experience working with coastal plants and remote sensing imagery is required. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of this work, this person will be integrated into multiple projects at once and needs to be able to work both independently and collaboratively.

Required Qualifications

• A BS degree in a science/environmental field
• Two years’ experience working with remote sensing data
• Proficient in ArcGIS, ENVI, R, and Microsoft Access
• Prior experience leading remote sensing projects
• Prior experience working in the field
• Able to keep in compliance with chemical safety guidelines
• Able to work several consecutive hours in the field with variable weather conditions
• Must be comfortable riding a boat to field sites
• Knowledge of biogeomorphology and long-term barrier island processes
• Flexibility and problem-solving skill
• Good and consistent communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Enthusiasm for science and science communication
