Deep Springs College seeks applicants for the position of Dean of the College to begin in June or July 2021. The appointment is full-time with benefits and is open to candidates at the junior or senior level in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, or fine arts.

The Dean of the College works closely with the President, faculty, and student body to support and strengthen the overall academic program at Deep Springs. This is both a faculty and administrative position. The Dean teaches one self-designed course per semester (two courses per academic year). Long-term faculty are expected to teach both within their area of expertise and more broadly. Ideal candidates are more than specialists, and consider their discipline in the context of a liberal education.

In addition to teaching, the Dean manages the administration of the academic program and provides advising and support to students and faculty. The Dean’s responsibilities include: supporting faculty development; chairing faculty meetings; serving as academic registrar; advising students throughout the college transfer process; supervising accreditation; monitoring the academic budget; and working with the Curriculum Committee to manage course scheduling, recruit faculty, and coordinate course evaluations. A complete job description can be found on our website.

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned and passionate teacher with experience in administration, a demonstrated commitment to supporting students and working effectively with faculty, and enthusiasm for Deep Springs College’s unique educational program.

The position is renewable for up to six years. Deep Springs College does not offer long-term tenure.

About Deep Springs College:

Deep Springs College is a private, nonsectarian, fully accredited 2-year college program for academically gifted young people, located on a small cattle-and- alfalfa ranch in a beautiful, remote area of the White Mountains on the California-Nevada border. The college’s 26-30 students receive full scholarships. After two years at Deep Springs, they typically transfer to America’s elite universities.

The college aims to educate students for a life of service by combining high-level academic coursework in the liberal arts, rigorous labor on the ranch, and broad student self-governance of community and academic affairs. Students milk cows, wash dishes, assist in the office, cook, clean, harvest alfalfa, and tend cattle, horses, and gardens. All members of the Deep Springs community—the students, faculty, staff, president, and resident families—live on-site and take part in fostering and developing community life, at the same time respecting each others’ need for privacy.

Deep Springs College is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion, national origin, religion, age, or disability. More information about our commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion can be found on our website.

The college is located in California’s Eastern Sierra region on Highway 168, 26 miles east of Big Pine, California, 11 miles from the Nevada state line. Death Valley National Park, Yosemite National Park, Mono Lake, and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest are all within a few hours’ drive. Los Angeles is a 5-hour drive away, Las Vegas is 4 hours; the San Francisco Bay Area is 7-8 hours depending on the season.
