Assistant Professor - Foundation Department

The Foundation Department at Pratt Institute invites applications for two full-time tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor rank to begin Fall 2021.

The Foundation Department teaches first-year undergraduates who will continue their studies in either the School of Art or the School of Design. Pratt Foundation is a year-long experience that transforms incoming students into an inclusive community of aspiring artists and designers. Immersive studio courses introduce fundamental concepts through individual and collaborative creative processes. This year of interdisciplinary research and experimentation prepares students to enter specialized majors, fosters self-discovery and social engagement, and instills a practice of seeing and critical inquiry that will endure throughout their lives. The Foundations Lab, which opened in the spring of 2020, supports exploratory study informed by the natural world and strengthens connections across Pratt Institute through interdisciplinary engagement in the first year and beyond.

The successful candidates will primarily teach the Space, Form, Process (SFP) course or Time and Movement (TM) course with the ability to teach in at least one additional area, and will be versed in teaching a range of materials and processes to help first-year students work independently and collaboratively to develop ideas and concepts into meaningful, well-crafted Beyond teaching and creative research, they will play an active role in the life of the Department and the Institute and will work with coordinators in all Foundation disciplines, as well as with the Foundations Lab, to create a cohesive and integrated first year experience.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Teach Space, Form, and Process or Time and Movement as well as in at least one additional area at the Foundation level (Light, Color, and Design or Visualization and Representation)

• Demonstrate and maintain substantial creative accomplishments and professional standing in applicant's field of art and/or design

• Participate in curriculum development and assessment of student learning

• Participate in committee work and other service to the department and Institute

• Provide leadership for their area faculty, and staff

• Active participation within the Foundations Lab; programming, research, and mentorship of students

• Full-time Foundation faculty teach a load of thirty studio contact hours annually, two six-hour classes per week one semester and three six-hour classes the second semester.
  

QUALIFICATIONS:

An MFA or equivalent, and at least two years of college/university/art school teaching experience, preferably at the Foundation level are required. Proven ability in the classroom and knowledge of different pedagogical practices will be primary considerations...A demonstrated rigorous creative research/practice and a strong record of professional accomplishment in the applicant's field of art and/or design is essential. A research practice in both art / design and the natural world is a strong plus. Candidates must also have excellent interpersonal skills, a demonstrated level of intercultural competence, and ability to work well with diverse populations.
