General Purpose: 

Reporting to the MCD Biology Administrator, this position will be responsible for overseeing, coordinating and implementing the undergraduate teaching laboratory support for several departments on science hill (MCDB, MB&B, EEB, and the Environmental Science Center). This role will work closely with faculty to establish teaching objectives, manage employees including oversight of time and attendance, daily performance and annual performance reviews. They will plan and implement organizational restructuring within the classrooms/labs and will maintain environments that are compliant with safety requirements. There is an average of thirteen teaching labs with 21+ sections per academic term and 1- 2 teaching laboratories during the summer term.

Supervises directs and manages the day to day operations and work of 3 non-exempt employees the staff, student and casual employees, to ensure the tasks are accomplished and safety protocols are followed and to ensure the coordination and preparation of the teaching laboratories.


Responsible for managing the support for laboratory instruction through the planning, organization, and preparation of biology teaching laboratories,


Consults with course instructors and teaching assistants during both the planning and implementation of the teaching labs to determine and coordinate support requirements.


Researches and recommends new procedures, instrumentation and technologies, based on the needs identified by the faculty.


Manages the work of the staff who initiate purchase requisitions, order material from stockroom, outside vendors and otherwise procure specialized materials and services required to support teaching laboratories.


Resolves technical and equipment problems in collaboration with faculty and technical support specialists.


Oversees the preparation of solutions and experimental media; assists in designing experiments and extrapolate/modify experimental design procedures as required by course instructors to meet the instructional needs of students.


Ensure the proper facility operation, cleanliness and safety of all teaching laboratory facilities according to University and other guidelines.


Oversee the process for disposal of hazardous materials.


Ensure the proper care of all living organisms used in the teaching laboratories.


Maintain inventory of teaching lab equipment and major support materials.


Maintain and prepare multi-purposed equipment for each class.


Contracts with outside vendors or department/university personnel for purchase, and maintenance of highly technical laboratory equipment.


Oversees the schedules of the teaching labs by assigning courses to available classrooms ensuring that the course needs are met.


New laboratory development / renovations, and teaching space analyses


Required Education and Experience: 

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and two years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



  • Familiarity with molecular, biochemical, field biology, genetics and physiological laboratory techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work with a variety of faculty, students, staff, and external vendors.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to appropriately and effectively discharge multiple and often conflicting priorities and deadlines, follow thru on a variety of open tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines independently or as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of research support equipment.
  • Ability to maintain inventories and allocate resources as necessary.
  • Preferred Education and Experience: Previous supervisory experience. Experience with Yale procurement and administrative systems. Working knowledge of the Yale on-line administrative systems, Microsoft Outlook, and Yale policies and procedures.
