The Department of Pathology Immunology is seeking aResearch Technologistto work under general supervision, perform clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following established procedures and protocols or with instruction. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance. Follows established procedures and protocols utilizing appropriate techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments. Exchange routine information in an appropriate manner. Has regular interaction with students, vendors, post-doctoral fellows, faculty members, and other clinical fellows. .

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follows established protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory experiments.
  • Sets up experiments based on defined standards.
  • Runs laboratory tests and completes measurements.
  • Collects and maintains project data.
  • Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects.
  • Operates and maintains basic laboratory equipment such as microscopes.
  • General laboratory upkeep for cleanliness and safety.
  • Responsible for routine operational activities such as ordering supplies and materials, reviewing inventory, maintaining up to date records of tests, etc., and preventive maintenance of equipment.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, bioengineering, chemistry, or related field required. Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications: Some related research laboratory experience strongly preferred.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of good lab practices required.
  • Computer and laboratory equipment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Musthave excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

Work Environment /While performing the duties of this job:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position sitting or standing. Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus.   • Will be required to run automation equipment in the Johns Hopkins ChemCORE in Miller Research Building. Required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides. Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory work stations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment.
  • Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
  • Laboratory environment - Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed. Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas.
  • Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment.
  • Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, radiation protocols, and other bio-hazardous materials. Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.
  • May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus (specify)). May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes or Formalin cubes). In some areas work space is limited.
  • Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must insure compliance with Johns Hopkins Policy, Laboratory Policy and Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy and confidentiality laws/practices.
  • Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment. (Overtime possible when authorized/needed to meet business and patient needs).

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical/laboratory environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
