Senior Audio Visual Technician (5465)



Summary/Objective

This position manages and oversees all audio visual services for events in the Katzen Arts Center. This includes providing logistical and operational support for internal and external clientele, ranging from the recording and mixing of events to the management of existing client relationships. Beyond the technical components of their role, this person manages and supervises the student technical staff within the Katzen Arts Center. This ranges from hiring and onboarding new part-time staff members to scheduling and other administrative duties. This role also provides general office and technical support to the direct supervisor and building management.

Essential Functions
  1. Events - In consultation with the Katzen Facilities and Operations Manager and Computer and Audio Services Coordinator, assist with the setup and technical direction of internal and external events (seminars, panels, lectures, film screenings, et. al.), which includes setting up multiple microphones, massive equalization to correct for room defects, lecterns, multiple computers for PowerPoint, projector setup, speaker system setup, setup of recording software and/or hardware, light programming, splitting signal for video setup and press box type functions, cleaning stage and facility, editing of recorded events and digital audio exporting. Assist with recording Music Program events.
  2. Technical Maintenance - Assist in the general maintenance and support of technical hardware within the Katzen Arts Center, including computers, projectors, copiers, and other devices utilized by College faculty, staff, and students within Katzen. Setup of new College faculty and staff computers throughout the building. Diagnose issues with input from users; provide solutions under the supervision of the Computer and Audio Services Coordinator. Assist in the maintenance of any College-owned in-house servers.
  3. Project Assistance and Team Support - Assist Computer and Audio Services Coordinator with large projects and installations. Provide support to the Katzen Facilities and Operations Manager and the Computer and Audio Services Coordinator in the development of time schedules for event and classroom support, ensuring there will be coverage for all of the building’s technology needs. Serve as a secondary point of contact for technical support issues in lab spaces within the building.
  4. Software Support - Assist in the setup and maintenance of software pertaining to the operations of the College departments housed within the Katzen Arts Center. Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with both Microsoft and Macintosh operating systems, as well as various other software products used within the building.
  5. Other duties as assigned by Katzen Facilities and Operations Manager or supervisor.


Supervisory Responsibility
  • Supervises 6-8 work-study students per semester, and up to a half dozen student volunteers. Gives appropriate input regarding equipment acquisition, repair, and general facility asset allocation.


Work Environment
  • This position reports to the Computer and Audio Services Coordinator
  • Supervises 6-8 work-study students assigned to various building tasks and provides assistance in the technical and operational aspects of the computer labs, classrooms and performance/event facilities.
  • This position works closely with the Computer and Audio Services Coordinator and requires a close and positive working relationship.
  • The incumbent may be requested to provide technical assistance within the position’s scope of duties to other College units.

  • Weekend and evening hours will be required


Position’s Required Presence (subject to change due to the University’s operating status)
  • Require partial presence on campus (mix of on-campus and remote work)


Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent in training or experience
  • 3 years experience in audio and video, electronics troubleshooting and repair, and computer applications
  • Thorough knowledge of multi-track recording live-sound engineering, digital audio technology, theatrical lighting units and dimming systems, electronic music technology, and MacOS and PC computers are necessary
  • Fundamental technical skills in the area of basic studio electronics and system troubleshooting required
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills are critical
