Scientific Laboratory Manager
The Tansey Laboratory in the Department of Neuroscience is seeking candidates experienced in rodent colony management and bench work with an advanced degree in a scientific area for a Scientific Laboratory Manager position. The Scientific Laboratory Manager is responsible for organizing and directing daily activities of Dr. Tansey’s laboratory. Laboratory management to include supervision of laboratory personnel, maintaining sufficient inventory of materials, supplies and equipment maintenance, assisting with developing budgets and collecting, research development, analyzing data, and interpreting lab results.
Responsibilities to include:
- Plan, coordinate, and direct the scientific activities within the laboratory
- Assist PI in setting program’s scientific goals and evaluate progress towards goals with PI on a regular basis. Coordinate with PI in planning and implementing research objectives.
- Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and protocols for the laboratory and research program.
- Provide cost data and projection for preparation of budgets.
- Monitor progress of work by laboratory personnel in relation to established goals and priorities and reviews completed assignments.
- Provides direct supervision and work flow plan to laboratory personnel.
- Monitor performance of quality control systems to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.
- Coordinates troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of instrumentation.
- Direct research efforts towards specific aims as outlined in grant applications and consult with research teams and/or necessary outside agencies.
- Supervise maintenance of animal colony (husbandry, genotyping, census spreadsheet).
- Supervise maintenance of database for incoming and outgoing specimens and reagents.
- Conduct and design experiments with neuronal and glial cell culture and 3D organoid cultures using molecular, biochemical, immunohistological, and microscopy techniques.
- Knowledge of rodent oral gavage, colonoscopy, and gastrointestinal infection highly desirable.
- Direct and coordinates the development and validation of new or improved sample analysis methods.
- Analyze data and prepares written reports of results.
- Construct research reports and experimental designed for peer reviewed journals and grant applications respectively.
- Remain current with analytical and technological advances through scientific literature, conferences, seminars, workshops and specialized short courses.
- Oversees and manages various projects across various groups in the laboratory.
- Ensure compliance with federal rules and regulations.
- Establish quality assurance and quality control practices to ensure compliance with good laboratory practice standards.
- Must onboard and train new personnel and keep track of Animal Care Services (ACS) and Institution Review Board (IRB) protocols and renewals and lab inspections.
Any other duties, as needed, to fulfill the mission and to abide by the values of the College of Medicine.
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience. Appropriate college course work may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
- Master’s degree or higher in a relevant scientific area
- Competitive candidates will have at least 3-4 years experience maintaining rodent colonies and working at the bench
- Experience in formal training and research supervision of undergraduate and graduate student
- Willingness to attend workshops and scientific conferences to stay abreast of cutting-edge technologies, and participate in writing of manuscripts and grant proposals
