Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

To assess the nutritional status, provide consultation and complete ongoing monitoring of patients in the Inborn Errors of Metabolism Program. The specific duties and responsibilities of this position can be described as:

-Provide nutritional assessment and consultation for patients of all ages who are identified as having an inborn error of metabolism. The RD is responsible for assessing the nutritional and educational needs of patients, developing care plans, educating patients about the nature and treatment of various metabolic conditions.
-Monitor progress and outcome of management by evaluating growth parameters and lab results. May entail contacting outside physicians or commercial labs to retrieve this information.
-Make arrangements for families to receive the various metabolic formulas needed for treatment, as determined by age and diagnosis of the patient. This entails communication with families, formula manufacturers and DME providers. On rare occasions, RD may be called upon to arrange for a formula delivery on non-work hours but comp time can be taken during the week to account for this time. Maintain a back up supply of a variety of infant metabolic formulas.
-Maintain contact with patients and health care providers by being responsive to email and phone communications. Must demonstrate excellent communication skills with people from a wide variety of educational backgrounds, literacy abilities and cultural origins.
-Document treatment plans, monitoring strategies and progress towards health goals in the electronic health record.
Participate in newborn screen follow-up for infants identified by newborn screening as possibly having a metabolic disorder. This involves communications with the Virginia Department of Health, area physicians and families. RD will carry a pager during the week. Each case must be tracked to completion when a diagnosis has been either confirmed or ruled out and appropriate documentation must be submitted to the Virginia Department of Health.
-Participate in the educational development of health care professionals from a variety of backgrounds and at various stages of their academic experiences, such as dietetic interns, genetic counseling students and pediatric residents. This can include classroom lectures and mentoring experiences.
-Maintain professional growth and development by attending educational events and communicating with other metabolic professionals.

Minimum Hiring Standards

Understanding of the specific dietary needs of children and adults with inborn errors of metabolism and developmental disabilities. Ability to interpret laboratory tests and make dietary modifications based on these tests. Ability to calculate and prescribe diets to meet the individual needs of patients.
Ability to counsel and educate families effectively and to work with a variety of health care professionals.
Must be able to carry and respond to pager 24/7, as there is no “back up” for this position.
Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics or related field required.
Registered Dietician credentials.

Preferred Hiring Standards

Certified Specialist in Pediatrics or some pediatric experience is preferred.
